Live Rust - Neil Young

Live Rust - Neil Young

Cinammon Girl, The Needle and the Damage Done, SUGAR MOUNTAIN, After the Gold Rush, Tonight's the Night - this album is QUITE the collection of some of Young's best hits. "In addition to the mellow songs, there are some louder, electric ones that are incredible as well, with Cinnamon Girl and Like a Hurricane being good examples. This album definitely has the 'live' thing going for it, and when you hear these cuts you won't settle for the studio versions anymore - it's cool to hear Neil connect with the audience - "When I get big, I'm gonna get an electric guitar. When I get real big". I kid you not - there is not a dud on the album. It is just incredible, and capable of providing pleasure worth orders of magnitude more than its price. I actually am typing this review because I would love to think someone bought this album as a result of it and enjoyed it as much as I have over the years (in CD format now, of course!)" Lara Johnston is clearly on the rise with her powerful voice and fiery, captivating stage presence. Touring tirelessly, Lara Johnston has performed in the United States, Europe and Canada where she has shared the stage or opened for:Michael McDonald, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Miller, Willie Nelson, KISS, Tower of Power, Heart, Sammy Hagar, Huey Lewis, Pablo Cruise, Journey and Cheap Trick. She also won 3rd place in the prestigious BMI Foundation John Lennon Scholarship Competition. Not many 21 year olds can attract the attention of some of the most powerful names in music as Lara has. While Lara generally writes her own songs, she spent months collaborating on her new album with Nashville greats like Producer/songwriter Mike Krompass, and song writers Steve Diamond, Jim McCormick, Tebey and Tommy Lee James. Between the five of them these chart topping songwriters have worked with artists like Taylor Swift, Pixie Lott, David Archuleta, and Orianthi. Their talent and expertise is very influential on Lara’s new album being released later this year. What makes her so captivating, aside from her beauty, is the powerful voice that comes from within her and her ability to perform them effortlessly with a range of influences including Pop, Funk, Gospel, Rock, Jazz and Blues. Perhaps her favorite is Soul music. She was inspired at a young age by Aretha Franklin. She has truly achieved her aspiration and inspiration; to channel Aretha’s powerful, emotional and heartfelt story telling, making Lara the extraordinary artist that she has become. Maroon 5 have released two multi-platinum studio albums (2002’s Songs About Jane and 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long), scored a string of hit singles (“This Love,” “She Will Be Loved,” “Harder to Breathe,” “Sunday Morning,” “Makes Me Wonder”), won three Grammy Awards, and sold 15 million albums around the world. Now the Los Angeles quintet is back with its third-studio album, entitled Hands All Over — a killer hybrid of rock, pop, funk, and R&B, that showcases the band’s considerable strengths: buoyant, unforgettable melodies, sleek, stylish grooves, charged lyrics about turbulent relationships, and crisp, dynamic performances. Adam Levine, the band’s lyricist, began writing the songs that appear on Hands All Over after winding down from a world tour in support of It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. A few months later, Maroon 5 received a phone call from veteran studio wizard Robert John “Mutt” Lange (AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars), who had heard that Maroon 5 were beginning to write a new album and expressed an interest in producing it. “We didn’t even talk to anyone else,” Levine says. “Mutt is undeniably one of the most successful producers who’s ever lived.” Levine’s first performing experience — in fact the event that ignited his desire to become a singer and musician — actually involves Lange. The story goes like this: 20 years ago, when Levine was 10, he attended a friend’s birthday party “at one of those places in the San Fernando Valley where the kids dress up in rock’n’roll gear and lip-sync their favorite songs,” he says. Levine chose the Def Leppard classic “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” “I knew I could sing because my music teacher told me I had a voice, but I had never really performed before. I grabbed the mic and just went for it. Afterwards I knew that I’ve got to do this for the rest of my life. That’s what got the whole ball rolling for me.” The classic anthem “Pour Some Sugar On Me” was, of course, famously produced by Lange. “If that’s not a full 360, I don’t know what is,” Levine says. “It doesn’t get more circular than that.” - Quoted from Amazon

The stunning new effort by internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter David Gray -- begins with those evocative and somewhat mysterious words. What follows is an extraordinary song cycle of rare and timeless power that bears a rather fitting title. As people today may or may not remember, the word “foundling” is defined as “an infant found after its unknown parents have abandoned it.” And as Gray puts it with a warm laugh, “Foundling sort of arrived at my door without my asking it to, so it felt very appropriate for this album.” In a sense, Foundling also marks another notable arrival -- the second coming of David Gray’s own second coming -- and one that truly “sprung like a wild orchid” in its own right. By 2005, Gray had already enjoyed what has been a rather distinguished career as a singer-songwriter and recording artist, having sold more than 12 million albums, including his global left-field smash, 1998’s White Ladder, which remains the single best selling album in Irish history. Gray had by this point already won two Ivor Novello Awards, a Q award, two Brit nominations and a GRAMMY nomination. But not a man or artist content to ever rest on his laurels, Gray decided that the time has come to shake things up in a significant way. So in 2006, David Gray decided to disband his longtime backing group, and to attempt to reconnect with his music before recording his excellent 2009 album Draw The Line with a new group of players at his studio The Church. “Draw the Line was essentially about the band, and four people playing together in a room,” says Gray. “But you can’t just keep going for unlimited takes. So on days when I felt everyone was getting a bit worn down and frayed at the edges -- and that it might be good to give everyone a little space -- I’d go into the studio on my own or maybe with one other person. I’d either work on tracks we already recorded or try to record other songs with just me on piano or guitar. That’s a lot of what eventually became Foundling. In essence, foundling became an alternate musical universe to Draw The Line. As Gray puts it,“ Foundling was an album done in slices of time in between band recording sessions. Eventually, I had the thought of recording and then mixing two separate albums during the same time period, so I then went back and took a closer look at the tracks and recorded a few overdubs and attempted to add a few finishing touches so that they sounded more complete. That’s how Foundling became like a tapestry that I hung on the other side of The Church. And I kept walking over and making little marks on it, and before you knew it, what started off as a side project was holding my attention as well as the main work.” - Quoted from Amazon

Universal Motown Records singer-songwriter-producer KEM has announced that he will release his third album, Intimacy, preceded by a series of online promotional videos that will reintroduce him to the marketplace by offering an intimate preview of what’s to come. The new CD is the Detroit native’s long awaited follow-up to his critically acclaimed and certified gold 2005 disc, KEM Album II. Intimacy was inspired by KEM’s deeply personal lessons on intimacy and it will allow fans to experience him unlike ever before musically, lyrically, and visually. For the first time in his career, KEM will lay all of his cards on the table and grant fans the opportunity to get up close and personal while delivering a 10-song collection of timeless music for the grown and sexy. Intimacy features vocal and production collaborations with the likes of Grammy-winning soul diva Jill Scott and the late Motown legend David J. Van dePitt, who famously produced Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterpiece, What’s Going On. Scott delivers enchanting verses of spoken word in “Golden Days,” while Van dePitt arranged the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s string section on the first single, a gorgeous ballad called “Why Would You Stay.” Los Angeles producer Rex Rideout (Luther Vandross, Angie Stone) also joined KEM in the studio to help round out the Intimacy listening experience. The result is a richer sound buttressed by classical instruments and a greater range of musical styles that will certainly expand KEM’s audience by garnering success across multiple formats, including pop, R&B, and urban adult contemporary. - Quoted from Amazon

But I was very pleasantly surprised by this collection as each artist (all very skilled and true artists) made each track their own. They made them new again. The songs kept their original flavor, while bringing something new, whether it was singing in a different key, adding harmonies, adding riffs, or giving the song a new feel. My favorite was Kevon Edmonds' rendition of "Never Let You Down." It was so good, I think that might have to be my wedding song someday! Kem's rendering of "Golden Time of Day" sent chills down my spine. I loved the new feel added to Musiq's "Silky Soul" and "I Wanna Thank You" with The Clark Sisters. Raheem DeVaughn knocked me out with his vocals on "We Are One," and Ledisi proved why she is a true artist and a powerful singer on "Happy Feelins." Mint Condition, the only band on the LP, turned in a solid performance that paid tribute to the old while making it new, while Joe and Avant were smooth on their tracks. The only track I wasn't impressed with was Mary J. Blige's "Before I Let Go." That's a hard song to remake and have people accept, but Mary didn't even sound like she was trying. But the song is not unbearable. This CD was so good, I HAD to write a review!”– J Double U (Amazon.com Review)

While faithful to the originals, these tracks vary in many ways, both in the colors their voices bring to the harmonies and in the styles of guitar work on display. Both performers clearly love the era and the radio singles they sang along to when they were young. Their emotional fidelity is as remarkable as their technical proficiency, and the fact that both have retained their youthful attitudes and voices in middle age (Hoffs is 50!) amazes this aging baby-boomer. Both CDs are a joy to listen to, and we can only hope that the two will give us further volumes devoted to the 80s, when Hoffs' group The Bangles had their heyday, and to the 90s, when Sweet made his commercial breakthrough. I also recommend the bonus tracks that you can download for this album, which include ten more interesting and adventuresome cuts:” – T.Davis “Tom Davis” (Amazon.com Review)

Their second release ‘Ocean, Meet the Valley’ is a little darker, a little deeper, and more dynamic yet retains some of the warm, catchy hooks that characterized their first release. They teamed up with engineer/producer Chris Grainger with one goal: to bring out the best in each other. Working long hours over 10 days, they bottled up a year of life, love, loss, and dreams to create a record with no pretentions and as rich as the gulf air. Sonically, this record possesses vintage tones through the use of 70’s era equipment and concepts. Acoustic guitars and warm, gritty electrics are intertwined with the smooth chime of a Rhodes or the haunt of a Hammond. Tones find their way to and fro through the structure of the song enough to keep things interesting without overshadowing the lyrical message. Take the raw energy of the Pixies and mix it with the understated themes of early Kenny Rogers, and you get something like this.” (Quotation taken from The Literary Greats website).

Duffy is the singer shaking up the industry. Trained off the streets of Paris, Madeleine Peyroux reestablishes herself as a masterful musician and elegant singer with her album “Bare Bones.” I treasured her soothing tone, which flows effortlessly from song to song. I look forward to listening to the songs after Thanksgiving, so I can stay calm during the wild shopping season. The song “Bare Bones” has wonderful energy, not too hurried and not too slow, that I can work to for hours. And with all the work that goes into the holiday season, can you afford not to download this song?

Over the years they have released albums that were pretty good, but their latest CD has to be one of my favorites! The beauty about "Tangled Tales" is how harmonious the music flows together. It reminds me of the classic Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, assembling country and blues' greats like David Grisman, Charlie Musselwhite, Roy Rogers, and Bruce Forman, and others! What is my pick of the bounty? Download "A Magician," and you'll see why I love it. His natural, folksy voice draws on the instruments and creates a musical experience you don't often see with today's artists. This song is one I will be holding onto for a long time.

Duffy is the singer shaking up the industry. I can't get enough of her voice, which is complex and earthy, highlighted by unusual soul for her age. “Mercy" does the British singer justice, mixing desire and fun into a track anyone can listen to and resonate with. Reviewer Amaranth "Music Fan" adds her "...ode to sexual liberation is as feisty as Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man." She sings with gusto and passion. Duffy, with her retro sound, is an Amy Winehouse without the baggage. Her song is reminiscent of the '60s. One can imagine the bell bottoms, the psychedelia, and the Beatles in their heyday." (Amazon.com) I totally recommend you download this single, and even the album!

Recovering from the tragic murders of her mother, brother, and cousin, Jennifer Hudson returns with a self-entitled album and a critically acclaimed single, "If This Isn't Love." Music reporter David Balls remarks "If This Isn't Love' is a delicate love song that finds Hudson in her natural comfort zone. 'God sent me an angel from above, that's going to love me for life,' she sings soulfully, with recent events making the lyrics particularly resonant. Combining modish beats with a cool, breezy chorus, 'If This Isn't Love' ...has an understated charm that's hard to quibble with." (Digitalspy.com) Listening to the song, I find myself an audience to Hudson's heart. Download it, and fall in love with her powerful voice too!

Perhaps the most famous of Hendrix's releases, he was at his PRIME when they recorded this version of Purple Haze. "When Jimi Hendrix walked onto the stage at Monterey he was relatively unknown in the United States. When he walked off the stage, popular music had been completely transformed. The American debut of the Jimi Hendrix Experience at Monterey isn't just the most exciting live rock concert ever recorded; it's also one of the most significant moments in the history of modern American music. Hendrix took the music world completely by storm and turned it on its head. His influence today is greater than ever, 41 years after the fact. Days after the mind-boggling "set the guitar on fire" stunt, Hendrix was a household word. The set kicks off fast and hard with Killing Floor, one wonders how Mitch Mitchell (drums) could keep up without injuring himself. Next up, Foxey Lady, soon to be a standard. The treatment of Bob Dylan's beautiful ballad, Like A Rolling Stone, is compelling and soulful. Rock Me Baby is simply beyond belief; it throws off heat like a jet engine. A hard-edged version of Hey Joe comes next; it's blues all right, but psychedelic blues. By the time Hendrix gets to Can You See Me? it's clear that he and his cronies are all settled down and solidly in the groove, this one speeds past like a bullet. The Wind Cries Mary is handled gently and carefully, it's a great song and provides a welcome break from the mayhem. Purple Haze has never sounded ruder, more demented, and incoherent - it is riveting. If you have any imagination at all, think about what this music must have sounded like to people who'd been nursed on The Platters, The Four Freshmen, and The Beach Boys. We are now completely accustomed to the influence Hendrix has had and it's easy to forget that when this was recorded what Hendrix was doing wasn't merely new, it was earth shattering. As to the closer, Wild Thing, I remember the Troggs version, sort of a frat house crowd pleaser. Hendrix takes it into the stratosphere; in many ways it's the highlight of the performance. Burning the guitar was theatrical genius, really, after you've just invaded the greatest nation on earth and conquered it in one night, what else is there to do?"
