Here on She Herself Alone: The Art of the Toy Piano 2, Ms. Tan uses no less than six different toy pianos. Some works find the toy piano performed with other instruments including grand piano, toy zithers, music boxes, glockenspiels and percussion, with Ms. Tan as a veritable one-person toy orchestra.

I listened to a stack of albums in the "World Music" section at the Virgin Mega Store and after nearly abandoning my search I came across the inspired talent of Souad Massi from Algeria. Souad Massi's sound is sometimes described as Algerian folk/rock, this maybe somewhat true, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm attracted to her lamentful ballads as well as her more urgent themes. Description Debut album by Algerian vocalist who is based in Paris. Thealbum fuses North African styles with western pop and folk,utilising both the acoustic guitar and the oud. Massi composed each of the songs and delivers them in either French or Arabic.

La Roux's self titled album contains the essence of 80's New Wave, featuring synth sequences that would fit in songbooks of Blancmange, The Human League, Dead or Alive and Eurythmics. I think La Roux would have been huge back in the dance era of the Thompson Twins and Thomas Dolby, but I'm happy they are part of a new dance explosion bent on geminating fans of Tecktonik (TCK), Electro Dance, Milky Way, Vertigo, and anything post-Emo.

My first exposure to Cambodian rock was in a restaurant when I was too young to ask what was playing. It was many years later that I found friends in New York who love Cambodian rock but wasn't sure who made it and where to find more. For those of you who haven't yet tasted Cambodian rock Electric Cambodia is a perfect introduction to the music. Chosen by the members of Dengue Fever from their collection of rare Cambodian cassettes. "Shave Your Beard" by Ros Sereysothea has been recorded by Dengue Fever and is a staple in their live set. This music was recorded in the 1960s and early '70s soon after Cambodia became an independent nation. It was a period of rapid modernization that not only influenced music, but also architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, and cinema. For many, it was Cambodia's own artistic renaissance, a time pointing to a hopeful future. This golden era came to a sudden end when the Khmer Rouge took control of the country in 1975 and brutally attempted to destroy any trace of modern society. Sadly, while many of the recordings of modern Cambodian rock and roll survived, most of the artists who created it did not. Over the last decade Dengue Fever has culled this compilation of their favorite Cambodian rock and roll from many different cassette tapes. The great music you'll find here is a testament to the spirit of a modern Cambodia that existed not so long ago, and should be remembered today.
