It was "Bulletproof" that hit me. La Roux's self titled album contains the essence of 80's New Wave, featuring synth sequences that would fit in songbooks of Blancmange, The Human League, Dead or Alive and Eurythmics. I think La Roux would have been huge back in the dance era of the Thompson Twins and Thomas Dolby, but I'm happy they are part of a new dance explosion bent on geminating fans of Tecktonik (TCK), Electro Dance, Milky Way, Vertigo, and anything post-Emo.

The collision between British musicians and Black American music has produced an ever growing treasury of limb-pulsing, butt-shaking, hart-swelling music, which--thankfully is often the result of soul-brothers and sisters made from the most unlikely sort--case in point, New Order. In "Get Ready" New Order ditch the temptation of dance-floor stagnation for what seems to be a reach for that mythical pop radio sound--dead since the late 80's--guess what, the idea turns out well. "Get Ready" a hybrid of post-punk-pop-and-b push songs you can sing (even when you don't know the words), music and melody that seem so familiar that you'd think they are pop standards. About the cover design of "Get Ready", at the time gave New Order a much needed youth fueled look firmly placed in the now, yet over the years this image of a young woman holding a consumer video camera will look less of the now, and more of the then, the then you missed out on, the then that was really cool. Nice work :) Noteworthy Tracks: Crystal 60 miles an hour Rock the Shack Someone Like You

Maroon 5 have released two multi-platinum studio albums (2002’s Songs About Jane and 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long), scored a string of hit singles (“This Love,” “She Will Be Loved,” “Harder to Breathe,” “Sunday Morning,” “Makes Me Wonder”), won three Grammy Awards, and sold 15 million albums around the world. Now the Los Angeles quintet is back with its third-studio album, entitled Hands All Over — a killer hybrid of rock, pop, funk, and R&B, that showcases the band’s considerable strengths: buoyant, unforgettable melodies, sleek, stylish grooves, charged lyrics about turbulent relationships, and crisp, dynamic performances. Adam Levine, the band’s lyricist, began writing the songs that appear on Hands All Over after winding down from a world tour in support of It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. A few months later, Maroon 5 received a phone call from veteran studio wizard Robert John “Mutt” Lange (AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars), who had heard that Maroon 5 were beginning to write a new album and expressed an interest in producing it. “We didn’t even talk to anyone else,” Levine says. “Mutt is undeniably one of the most successful producers who’s ever lived.” Levine’s first performing experience — in fact the event that ignited his desire to become a singer and musician — actually involves Lange. The story goes like this: 20 years ago, when Levine was 10, he attended a friend’s birthday party “at one of those places in the San Fernando Valley where the kids dress up in rock’n’roll gear and lip-sync their favorite songs,” he says. Levine chose the Def Leppard classic “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” “I knew I could sing because my music teacher told me I had a voice, but I had never really performed before. I grabbed the mic and just went for it. Afterwards I knew that I’ve got to do this for the rest of my life. That’s what got the whole ball rolling for me.” The classic anthem “Pour Some Sugar On Me” was, of course, famously produced by Lange. “If that’s not a full 360, I don’t know what is,” Levine says. “It doesn’t get more circular than that.” - Quoted from Amazon

E... Though I can't understand why this beautiful cover was used only for the Japanese release, one look communicates both Duff's complete progression from child star to sophisticated entertainer and the album's effortless sexiness. Equally exciting is Hilary's status as lyricist and co-writer on all of the album's tracks (with the exception of Outside of You, originally intended to be a P!nk track): no one can deny that Dignity is very much Hilary's show. The fantastic part of Hilary Duff's music is its relentless optimism and strength. Not that she doesn't tackle difficult topics -- hardly, two of the album's best tracks (Gypsy Woman and Stranger) directly concern her parents' divorce -- but the listener never gets the impression that Hilary is one to simply accept defeat. Songs like Never Stop single-handedly steamroll every pessimist, pretentious faux-intellectual with the unstoppable force of someone who loves life and knows why. Dignity is incredible. The Japanese import comes with an alternate cover and lyrics booklet and the DJ Kaya remix of With Love.

Passion is the norm and apathy is non-existant. Relationships are dramatic and individuals bold. Bryan Ferry's Boys and Girls is the absolute pinnacle and summation of debonair elegance in both style and content. Mediocrity and ugliness are absent not only from the music, but from the ideas expressed. Ferry exudes sophistication and a sexiness more at home in the golden age of Hollywood than 1985. Boys and Girls is dazzling.

Many people like to keep their favorite bands to themselves, only sharing their prized fan-dom with their closest friends, I suppose we all want to have access to the people and things we love most, and feel that standing in the back of a line to see what one discovered by chance rather than through mass media is a humiliating thought. One such band which I keep close to my chest is Dengue Fever. It's hard not to dance when listing to Dengue Fever--which is not surprising--but what is surprising is that their sound is inspired by 1960s Vietnam-war-era form of Cambodian rock called "Khmer Rock", a pop genre that was huge in Cambodian but has only recently come to the radios, and ipods of North America. Here's the thing, Dengue Fever is a L.A. based group who's infectious sound is a not only fueled with a tank of Khmer Rock but is also lined with cool quilting of Southeast Asian pop, Vietnam-war-era lounge music, klezmer, ska, surf rock, and Ethiopian jazz. Anyway, I think it would be fine if Dengue Fever became big here in the States, so there. And what about you, what band are you keeping to yourself, send me a complement and tell me ;)
