Get Ready ~ New Order
The collision between British musicians and Black American music has produced an ever growing treasury of limb-pulsing, butt-shaking, hart-swelling music, which--thankfully is often the result of soul-brothers and sisters made from the most unlikely sort--case in point, New Order. In "Get Ready" New Order ditch the temptation of dance-floor stagnation for what seems to be a reach for that mythical pop radio sound--dead since the late 80's--guess what, the idea turns out well. "Get Ready" a hybrid of post-punk-pop-and-b push songs you can sing (even when you don't know the words), music and melody that seem so familiar that you'd think they are pop standards. About the cover design of "Get Ready", at the time gave New Order a much needed youth fueled look firmly placed in the now, yet over the years this image of a young woman holding a consumer video camera will look less of the now, and more of the then, the then you missed out on, the then that was really cool. From the opening movements of "Dia Artio" (track one) though to the album's final track "Two Hunters" quickly crosses into sonic worlds belonging to neighboring music genres, and continues the crossing cloaked in many colors taken from Nordic song, shoegazer guitar, and contemporary composition. Wolves in the Throne Room are creating a familiar yet new facet in the process designing a gem like sound and what strikes me is that with each new music invention an epic sound-scape is born in the wake of it.

This backwoods journey is lead by the s... I was taken aback by the original version of "Madman Across the Water" included in this reissue of the classic "Tumbleweed Connection". "Tumbleweed" is young Elton John at his most country. This backwoods journey is lead by the stories and caricatures that Bernie Taupin presents in verse, yet for me it is the version of "Madman Across the Water" stands out as a burning gem of pop song craftsmanship, I think it was a great gift to the album as a bookend to "Tumbleweed's" first track "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun".

Gang of Four came on hot and heavy on their early recordings, "Entertainment" contains many of their signature pre-Euro tracks, the sound is all raw energy, perfect for dancing or smelting in a Black Sea hotel.

"Kwa Nqingetje" was the track that caught my ear, featuring vocals that reminded me of Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues over a loose waltzing ballad punctuated by Jazz drumming. I will keep a ear out for Blk Jks, I'd like how they evolve.

It was many years later that I fo... I'd like to thank Dengue Fever for putting names and faces to Cambodian rock and roll history. My first exposure to Cambodian rock was in a restaurant when I was too young to ask what was playing. It was many years later that I found friends in New York who love Cambodian rock but wasn't sure who made it and where to find more. For those of you who haven't yet tasted Cambodian rock Electric Cambodia is a perfect introduction to the music. Chosen by the members of Dengue Fever from their collection of rare Cambodian cassettes. "Shave Your Beard" by Ros Sereysothea has been recorded by Dengue Fever and is a staple in their live set. This music was recorded in the 1960s and early '70s soon after Cambodia became an independent nation. It was a period of rapid modernization that not only influenced music, but also architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, and cinema. For many, it was Cambodia's own artistic renaissance, a time pointing to a hopeful future. This golden era came to a sudden end when the Khmer Rouge took control of the country in 1975 and brutally attempted to destroy any trace of modern society. Sadly, while many of the recordings of modern Cambodian rock and roll survived, most of the artists who created it did not. Over the last decade Dengue Fever has culled this compilation of their favorite Cambodian rock and roll from many different cassette tapes. The great music you'll find here is a testament to the spirit of a modern Cambodia that existed not so long ago, and should be remembered today.
