The Jewel in the Crown (1984)

The Jewel in the Crown (1984)

This series is absolute perfection. The acting is magnificent (especially Art Malik!!!), the story is fascinating and the characters are so real that one thinks that one is actually watching a documentary about the final days of the Raj. "The Jewel in the Crown" is the exemplar of the height of drama. A magnificent series that everyone should see!!

I was a fan of the great German choreographer Pina Bausch before I had even seen any of her performances. Just the still photographs that would appear here and sparked a curiosity and an appreciation of her work. Luckily for me I was able to see several of her pieces before she passed. I believe that Wim Wenders has been able to capture the rare essence of Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wupperta in this film, and I am extremely grateful for that.

Approximately as many as 30, 000 people "disappeared" (Los Desaprecidos). Many of the disappeared were young pregnant women who as soon as they gave birth were murdered. Their children were adopted by some of the military who participated in the Dirty War or by people who couldn't have children. These children of the disappeared were never told who they really are. Cautiva is a fictional account with a historical basis of what some of the children of the disappeared have gone through. Barbara Lombardo gives a stunning performance of a young girl who finds out she is not who she thinks she is.

This art movie describes modern life as Koyaanisqatsi, a Hopi term meaning "out of balance". The movie, made in the 80s, is part of the Qatsi trilogy, and uses such techniques as slow-motion, time-lapse video and stock footage of events like the liftoff of Apollo 13 to bring out the changes Man has wrought on the face of the planet and raises important questions on the sustainability of such a lifestyle. All this is set to brilliant music, sometimes frenetic, sometimes the haunting chorus of the word "Koyaaniqatsi". All this seems particularly relevant in these days of environmental hyper-awareness, but even without its message, the movie is an experience to savour. The movie does not seek to condemn so much as it tries to provoke. The slow-mo shots of steam rising from rows of cooling towers, the perfect symmetry of massed Soviet tanks, these are images whose beauty rivals other shots of the Grand canyon and the clouds flowing over mountains. All of this presents us with the scale of changes we as humans have brought about. We are allowed to make our own conclusions from this.

  • Duh, this movie is ancient history now. The soundtrack, had little traction past the initial hype anyways. However, I think it does deserve a nod. I mean, it really is a collection of 19 really fun songs.

It was one of 2005's most critically acclaimed films, and won the Camera D'or for Best First Film at Cannes. Say if Diablo Cody had not only written Juno, but directed and starred in it as well, you'd be coming close to Me and You and Everyone We Know territory. Miranda July, who wrote, directed and stars as Christine, who falls in love with Richard (John Hawkes), a divorcing father and shoe salesman. How do hopeless people fall in love when they're hopeless? Watch this and find out. It's quietly confident, sunny, sweet and quirky, much in the vein of Juno but without the insanely hip dialogue. It's sweet central love story is tempered by some very audacious moments involving sex, but it's got so much charm it's hardly offensive enough to matter. Oh and ))<>((.

Joe Gillis (William Holden), bankrupt screenwriter, hides from car repossessors in the garage of a deserted-looking mansion which proves to be the grotesque home of Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), retired silent screen star. Joe takes refuge there, with a nominal job of rewriting Norma's hopeless 'comeback' screenplay. Weeks pass; feeling more and more like a kept man, Joe grasps at reality in the form of a clandestine friendship with script reader Betty Schaefer, but it's too late... This movie won 3 Oscars, had another 13 wins an 13 nominations... So who can argue with that? It is a great, great movie (10 stars out of 10)
