Good grief, will this movie come out already?! I read the graphic novel and wasn't that impressed. It was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. This Ralph Bakshi animated version of the Hobbit freaked me out as a kid. It still does. Its pretty dark. Great movie.

In some varying degree, this film, actually, transports you into the mind of the dysfunctional gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson. The role by Depp is beyond genius and obviously a byproduct of their close friendship. I think... Read his historical novels (emphasis on historical) and you'd swear you'd been there. His religious novels keep you riveted even if you aren't Mormon. Ender's Game is his jewel. Four books that among them have won innumerable awards. These are not books which have crossed genre, these are books that cause other genres to lose readers.

Set in the summer of 1994, New York City, 'The Wackness' centers around Luke Shapiro, a recent high school grad, who plans to continue his lucrative business of dealing pot in addition to getting laid. Shaprio believes he is depressed and trades therapy sessions with Dr. Squires, in exchange for weed and conversation. The doctor, who is struggling with a rehab-addicted wife and a slight mid-life crisis, welcomes the chance to regain his youth listening to beats and hitting the streets with his new friend. The summer heats up when Stephanie, Dr. Squires' stepdaughter, decides to get jiggy with Luke. It's a difficult task to write a novelization of a screenplay but Dale C. Phillips has done an excellent job. He successfully captured the time period and the relationship that these characters have with each other and New York City. If you're looking for a good quick summer read, head to the bookstore to pick up a copy of 'The Wackness'.
