24 Hour Party People
So this may actually be one of the smartest movies I have seen in a while. True, there is a LOT of crap out there, but that doesn't change the fact that this movie is brilliant. Basically, it tells the story of this guy Tony Wilson and how he made Manchester the center of music in the seventies. It is build like a documentary and it's entertaining as hell! Tony Wilson makes so many smart, sarcastic side comments, you can't but smirk most of the time. You get a pretty good idea on the atmosphere of the time, not to mention on the musical scene. Joy Division, The sex pistols, New Order, Happy Mondays.....just to name a few. It's definetly worth watching! (and yes, I jumped up and down like an idiot when they showed Janie Jones from the Clash for miserable 5 seconds).

Certainly one of the funniest movies ever made, but it also has an often overlooked, but tightly wound and very enjoyable plot. The dude just wants his rug back. Hilarity ensues.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Noah Wylie, Drew Barrymore in a flick by Richard Kelly. Plus, it has an awesome 80s soundtrack. Listen to the commentary (especially on the directors cut version) and you'll think Richard Kelly is a very smart person.

You could dismiss this movie as another drug movie but Drugstore Cowboy a bit more than that. The 1989 crime drama written and directed by Gus Van Sant introduces to an ensemble that today still makes us fall in love with Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham, and William S. Burroughs. Filmed mainly around Portland the story follows drug addicts as they travel across the US Pacific Northwest in the early 70s, supporting their habit by robbing pharmacies and hospitals. A highlight of the film is an appearance by recovering addict William S. Burroughs a defrocked priest who lectures Matt's character on the dangers of temptation. After a tragedy strikes the gang-Matt's character decides to try to "go straight," but finds that its not the drug that keeps bound, well I won't tell you more in case you decide to watch. PS: the soundtrack has been my favorite 15 years.

For me, this was the first Cohen Brothers film I saw. In no questionable way, it transformed me into a lifetime fan. And, even though it was made over 20 years ago, it remains one of the funniest films I've ever seen.
