Half Nelson

Half Nelson

This is an amazing movie and thank you for not patronizing me by telling me everything will be O.K. and giving me a sugar coated ending. I'm not saying everything is messed up in the end of this movie, but I like where it concluded. Ryan Gosling is a basehead. And he's a NYC school teacher. Conflict of interest maybe? Yes. He forms a friendship with one of his young students who's about to make a pretty bad move. Can he steer her in the right direction? Well, would you take advice from a crack head. I think not. All the actors in this movie were outstanding! Rent this. Don't walk, run.

  • Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation is truly the indie romantic film of 2003.

The soundtrack to the movie single is wonderful but the film is so so, a bit boring. This was romantic comedy that made more sense in the last five years than it did in 1992 when I was just beginning to understand what or who I was going to be. The movie is set in Seattle with you guessed it a soundtrack of grunge (except for Nirvana). I mean, the soundtrack starts with “Would” by Alice in Chains and ends with “Drown” by the Smashing Pumpkins. In between, you get tracks from Pearl Jam, Sound garden, and Mudhoney. Overall I recommend the album because music is never dated but the film, gosh I can start hating the 90s again because of it.

My favorite movie ever. From the opening scene, the soundtrack is perfect, you watch as Harold prepares and then hangs himself. This is one of several brilliant scenes where he fakes his own suicides desperately trying to get the attention of his rich mother. Enter Maude, an eccentric old woman he meets at a funeral. It's a love story. A love story with life.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

Gritty, gripping and an utterly magnetic turn by Ryan Gosling (who has done nothing but the highest quality work since this film introduced him). Gosling plays Danny Balint, a neo-nazi skinhead who is living an impossibly contradictory life because he's also a Jew. Violent, articulate and terrifyingly charismatic, Balint's only saving grace (weakness?) is what drives his hatred - his Judaism. This isn't an easy film and saying that is a vast understatement. It's brutally violent, frightening but also important.

In the entire history of American movies, The Night of the Hunter stands out as the rarest and most exotic of specimens. It is, to say the least, a masterpiece--and not just because it was the only movie directed by flamboyant actor Charles Laughton or the only produced solo screenplay by the legendary critic James Agee (who also cowrote The African Queen). The truth is, nobody has ever made anything approaching its phantasmagoric, overheated style in which German expressionism, religious hysteria, fairy-tale fantasy (of the Grimm-est variety), and stalker movie are brought together in a furious boil. Like a nightmarish premonition of stalker movies to come, Night of the Hunter tells the suspenseful tale of a demented preacher (Robert Mitchum, in a performance that prefigures his memorable villain in Cape Fear), who torments a boy and his little sister--even marries their mixed-up mother (Shelley Winters)--because he's certain the kids know where their late bank-robber father hid a stash of stolen money. So dramatic, primal, and unforgettable are its images--the preacher's shadow looming over the children in their bedroom, the magical boat ride down a river whose banks teem with fantastic wildlife, those tattoos of LOVE and HATE on the unholy man's knuckles, the golden locks of a drowned woman waving in the current along with the indigenous plant life in her watery grave--that they're still haunting audiences (and filmmakers) today.

Knowing her only as the buoyant Mary of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", I was even more chilled by her character's inability to connect with anyone but herself. And although Timothy Hutton's struggles are primarily psychological, he makes them almost tangible through his vibrant and honest portrayal of a young man who has lost sight of what he wants from life . . . and if he really wants to live.
