Chinatown

Roman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Fabulous movie - a must-see!!

  • Quite the thriller I'd say. It has death, sickness, suspense, everything you could ever need in a scary movie.

  • This movie is pretty cool and is underrated. Ryan Gosling plays a new attorney trying to figure out who murdered Anthony Hopkins wife.

  • I'll put it this was, Forrest Whitaker winning best actor wasn't a fluke. There is no doubt, this was one the best films of '06.

Per this one, it's about a writer who locks himself in a cabin after a breakup and becomes stocked by the worst of influences. It sounds a lot worse than it is.

Gritty, gripping and an utterly magnetic turn by Ryan Gosling (who has done nothing but the highest quality work since this film introduced him). Gosling plays Danny Balint, a neo-nazi skinhead who is living an impossibly contradictory life because he's also a Jew. Violent, articulate and terrifyingly charismatic, Balint's only saving grace (weakness?) is what drives his hatred - his Judaism. This isn't an easy film and saying that is a vast understatement. It's brutally violent, frightening but also important.

A chilling, amusing and near perfect film with enough quirks and foibles to give the audience a sense of otherworldiness. Film noir set in a rural part of the country and the hero is a very pregnant, tough-as-nails cop. Who else but the Coen Brothers could come up with something like this? I grew up pretty close to North Dakota, just over the border in Saskatchewan. So much about Fargo hit home for me when I first saw it. Saskatchewan winters are just like this, and while the accents where I come from aren't quite as distinctive, they're still very similar.

He hasn't slept in a full year and is on the edge of madness. Which doesn't go over well when you're working with heavy machinery. Needless to say, strange things begin to happen and he can't discern who's real and who's a hallucination. Can you?

Forget the remake starring Sylvester Stallone (who were they trying to kid, really?). Get Carter is a gritty, tense crime movie, and a classic of British cinema. It still has a tinge of the swinging 60s with its brilliantly evocative soundtrack and inclusion of stars Michael Caine and Britt Ekland. Carter is not a particularly clever but well-dressed thug from London, who is driven by a cold yet inspired revenge when he travels to Newcastle to avenge his brother's death. It's a masterfully told and acted tale, as we follow Carter through the sad and seedy underbelly of working-class Newcastle. Stark and unsettling, it's truly a classic.

A devout and pious Catholic police sergeant travels to a remote Scottish island when he receives word that a young girl has gone missing. What he finds shocks and subtly intrigues while threatening his religious beliefs - a deeply pagan and close-knit society who worship nature over established religion. With strange customs and overt sensuality on full display at each turn, Edward Woodward's Sergeant Howie rallies forth to do his duty and solve the central mystery of the missing child. Entangling with the town's charmingly sinister leader Lord Summerisle (a wonderful Christopher Lee), the beguiling landlord's daughter and nymph Willow (Britt Eckland) and a host of other vaguely sinister characters, Howie delves deeper and deeper into the mysteries of the island, until the Wicker Man's stunning conclusion. It's an utterly unforgettable and original film, sadly underrated at the time of its release and it's brilliance was barely touched by the abysmal, woefully misguided 2006 remake of the same name.
