My Life - Bill Cinton

My Life - Bill Cinton

An exhaustive, soul-searching memoir, Bill Clinton's My Life is a refreshingly candid look at the former president as a son, brother, teacher, father, husband, and public figure. Clinton painstakingly outlines the history behind his greatest successes and failures, including his dedication to educational and economic reform, his war against a "vast right-wing operation" determined to destroy him, and the "morally indefensible" acts for which he was nearly impeached. My Life is autobiography as therapy--a personal history written by a man trying to face and banish his private demons.

It is the biography of Marcus Tullius Cicero, the ancient Roman patriot and orator. Caldwell spent 9 years reasearching, mainly by translating the actual collection of Cicero's letters at the Vatican archives. Published in the late 1960s, it chronicles the fall of Rome and how it mirrors the fall of the US today in almost everyway including; massive immigration, violating the constitution of rome, corruption of senators, sending tax dollars to foreign client nations, endless war, abandonment of tradition values for profit, and debt financing. It is amazing! It has all happened before, and is wriiten here as plain as day as though it were a blueprint for our times.

This film was criticized as playing fast and loose with history and being vacuous to boot. It tells the story of arguably the most famous and infamous queen in history, French queen Marie Antoinette, whose husband was at the helm of a France dissolving into revolution. Sofia Coppola has crafted a believable story around the teenager thrust into the pomp of overblown French society. And too little positive attention has been given to the attention paid to all the costumes, sets and style of the film. That's what sticks out most - and Coppola should not be criticized for "glossing over" the historical details. This is a film about Marie Antoinette, not Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution. It's soundtracked to surprising effect with new wave - yet another thing Coppola's been criticised for - but it adds interest and allows for Marie Antoinette's story to have some modern relevance. It's a candy-coloured fantastic film full of visual delights and Kirsten Dunst does a stellar job in the lead role.
