Accelerate: R.E.M.

They're ba-ack. After the disappointing "Around the Sun" I was slightly leery of Accelerate, not getting my hopes too high. But all the plaudits from the magazines are well deserved. This is a rockin' album, full of energy and driving songs. They might not have quite recaptured their youth, but they're revitalized and kicking out some great tunes

  • One of the greatest Live albums cause it has Iris, Lightening Crashes and I Alone.

I still didn't have a CD player yet, but I listened to this album and rewound it and played it again and again.

  • Wilco caught my attention with Heavey Metal Drummer and the rest is history. This whole album has something about it that just catches you.

The songs are catchy and the guitars are really strong. "El Distorto De Melodica" could be as distorted and heavy as anything off of the Matrix soundtrack, while "I Will Buy You A New Life" was a great, modern rock, mainstream hit. A terrific 90 album.

We'd play it all the time, and there's such a range to the songs, musically. "3am" and "Push" were big alt rock hits at the time, but "Long Day", and "Girl Like That" share the same hooky guitars and infectious song structure. The rest of the album is great too though. "Busted" opens with a blistering riff and keeps going. "Hang" ends it on a more mellow note. The album swings between catchy guitar driven songs, and more angsty numbers.

So it's not surprising to see STPs second album is a favorite of mine. The incredibly catchy and radio friendly "Interstate Love song" sits somewhat centrally, which is appropriate as the album ventured between heavy guitars in songs like "Vasoline" and still powerful, but mainstream songs like "Big Empty".

Pearl Jam's second album builds on their solid grunge backbone but takes it a step closer to mainstream domination. "Daughter" was a massive hit, but it also takes the dirty guitars out in favor of a more stripped down sound. "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" is almost entirely acoustic and is a much softer in tone. There's still killer songs like "Dissident" which sound much like you'd expect from Seattle's grunge scene, but this album sees them evolving.

  • The second Jane's Addicition album saw them build on their great alt-rock songs and screaming-sung vocals to deliver a sophomore album to match their great debut. Sadly, this would be the last album from these guys as a whole.

  • Jane's Addiction were such a great alt-rock band. Neither Perry Farrel, nor Dave Navaro have been quite able to match what they did together here and on Ritual de lo Habitual since since. Essential track "Jane Says".

  • A wacky group from Omaha that incorporates hand claps and foot stomps along with unconventional instrumentation. Uh, it sounds better than I am making it out to be, I swear.
