Sondheim was and is a game and puzzle nut, a guy who once published his own collection of British-style “cryptic” crosswords and use to host elaborate murder mystery weekends with his friend Anthony Perkins. Perkins and Sondheim collaborated on the script to this amazingly intricate whodunit featuring a quintessential seventies cast (James Coburn, Dyan Cannon, Richard Benjamin, Raquel Welch, etc.). I saw this last week and it just knocked me on my ass. I’ve seen plenty of movies from this 70s fad for convoluted murder puzzles (Deathtrap, Sleuth, all those mediocre Agatha Christie movies starring down-on-their-luck “international” casts in alphabetical order) and Sheila, with its literally dozens of clues and puzzles hiding in plain sight, makes them all look like Encyclopedia Brown mysteries. Just the still photographs that would appear here and sparked a curiosity and an appreciation of her work. Luckily for me I ... I was a fan of the great German choreographer Pina Bausch before I had even seen any of her performances. Just the still photographs that would appear here and sparked a curiosity and an appreciation of her work. Luckily for me I was able to see several of her pieces before she passed. I believe that Wim Wenders has been able to capture the rare essence of Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wupperta in this film, and I am extremely grateful for that.

The movie inter-weaved several plot lines around the consequences of a tragic automobile accident and made us focus on the true meaning of life and death, did you know that your soul weighs 21 Grams (Benny said so). Loved the film and loved meeting Noemi and Benny the bull!

The soundtrack to the movie single is wonderful but the film is so so, a bit boring. This was romantic comedy that made more sense in the last five years than it did in 1992 when I was just beginning to understand what or who I was going to be. The movie is set in Seattle with you guessed it a soundtrack of grunge (except for Nirvana). I mean, the soundtrack starts with “Would” by Alice in Chains and ends with “Drown” by the Smashing Pumpkins. In between, you get tracks from Pearl Jam, Sound garden, and Mudhoney. Overall I recommend the album because music is never dated but the film, gosh I can start hating the 90s again because of it.

Primer won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and has drawn repeat viewers eager to crack writer-director-star Shane Carruth's puzzler of a time-travel drama. Carruth, an engineer by training, plays inventor Aaron, whose entrepreneurial partnership with fellow brainiac Abe (David Sullivan) unexpectedly results in a process for traveling back several hours in time. The men initially use these rewind sessions to succeed in the stock market. But a dark consequence of their daily journeys eventually complicates matters. If this sounds like a very commercial, science fiction thriller, Primer is anything but that. Shot on 16mm for $7,000, the film has a tantalizing, sealed-in logic, akin to Memento, that forces viewers to see the fantastic with a certain dispassion. One may be tempted to sit through Primer again to more fully understand its paradoxes and ethical quandaries. You have to want to understand this movie. Watch it once, and you'll never get it. Watch it twice, and you'll like it even more, but won't understand it. Watch it three times, once with the commentary on and then read about it for 6 hours on the internet and you'll begin to understand. It takes dedication, but its worth it.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Noah Wylie, Drew Barrymore in a flick by Richard Kelly. Plus, it has an awesome 80s soundtrack. Listen to the commentary (especially on the directors cut version) and you'll think Richard Kelly is a very smart person.
