Souad Massi's "Raoui" came out at a time when I wanted to return to non-American music, but I was looking for something that sounded complete, something with soul, something that was going to take me deeper into contemporary music without gimmicks. I listened to a stack of albums in the "World Music" section at the Virgin Mega Store and after nearly abandoning my search I came across the inspired talent of Souad Massi from Algeria. Souad Massi's sound is sometimes described as Algerian folk/rock, this maybe somewhat true, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm attracted to her lamentful ballads as well as her more urgent themes. Description Debut album by Algerian vocalist who is based in Paris. Thealbum fuses North African styles with western pop and folk,utilising both the acoustic guitar and the oud. Massi composed each of the songs and delivers them in either French or Arabic.

The Mael brothers now have a tribute album...well, sort of. The unofficial word is that they couldn't find enough people to participate in a tribute recording so they made one to themselves. Hard to believe, but maybe everyone but Jimmy Somerville was afraid to compete with Russell Mael's munchkin-on-helium vocals. So Sparks re-made their own songs, adding orchestration and turning up the camp to stratospheric heights, sounding like Kurt Weill on nitrous oxide. And yes,Erasure and Faith No More did contribute to this record, but what's particularly impressive about this collection is all the great songs that AREN'T here--enough to fill another tribute. And what about that beefcake cover photo? Is it realor is it Photoshop? You decide.

From the opening movements of "Dia Artio" (track one) though to the album's final track "Two Hunters" quickly crosses into sonic worlds belonging to neighboring music genres, and continues the crossing cloaked in many colors taken from Nordic song, shoegazer guitar, and contemporary composition. Wolves in the Throne Room are creating a familiar yet new facet in the process designing a gem like sound and what strikes me is that with each new music invention an epic sound-scape is born in the wake of it.

For years I thought that it must be the The Isley Brothers, or some forgotten gem from The Temptations, and then one night I heard it again, this time on my radio in Brooklyn, so waited breathlessly through 5 other songs and a station break before the Dj finally revealed the name of the f%&#@ing song and the band name which I never would have guessed--"Heaven 17"!!? Heaven 17 is a band I turned my back to long ago, never ever expecting to enjoy anything they might offer (the foolish thing to do) . Hmm...So what could I do, I when and picked up a copy of "The Best of Heaven 17" and was surprised at how much I loved their early songs, and lucky for me the song I'd heard in Paris was actually on the album. I tip my hat boys.

This backwoods journey is lead by the s... I was taken aback by the original version of "Madman Across the Water" included in this reissue of the classic "Tumbleweed Connection". "Tumbleweed" is young Elton John at his most country. This backwoods journey is lead by the stories and caricatures that Bernie Taupin presents in verse, yet for me it is the version of "Madman Across the Water" stands out as a burning gem of pop song craftsmanship, I think it was a great gift to the album as a bookend to "Tumbleweed's" first track "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun".
