Manhattan (1979)

Isaac, 42, has divorced Jill. She is now living with another woman, Connie, and is writing a book in which she will reveal some very private points of their relationship. Isaac has a love affair with Tracy, 17, when he meets Mary, the mistress of his best friend Yale. Yale is already married to Emily. This ever delightful movie stars Woody Allen as Isaac Davis, Diane Keaton as Mary Wilkie, Michael Murphy as Yale and Mariel Hemingway as Tracy. One of my favorite Woody Allen... and there are many!

The film is based on the Orphean myth and on Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata. It tells the story of a young, English poet Christian who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine. Both characters break out into love songs of all my favorite hits.

Of course you have Cusack who is a one of those guys you just can't help but adore. The film is about love and music, two things that breath life into everything. Taken from the book by Nick Hornby and directed by Stephen Frears so really with all these brilliant minds on one project, how can you go wrong?

  • This is Wong Kar-Wai, a man with a very distinct vision in his movies. I also love the music and the dresses she wears in this film.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

But maybe not so unconventional, how well do you know the people in the cubicles next to yours??? The wonderful Maggie Gyllenhaal is Lee Holloway, a young woman just released from a mental hospital who finds a job with imperious, perfectionist lawyer Edward (James Spader), who has his own secrets. As the two work together, a complex relationship begins to evolve... Stylish, very sexy, darkly funny, intelligent and compelling, Secretary isn't for everyone, but such fun for those who have wicked or only slightly wicked minds.

  • An elegant love story. I still cry EVERY time even though I've seen it a billion times.

  • I absolutely love this movie. Yes, it is a chick flick, but some men might find it entertaining. I wish it would be shown on TV more often. I haven't seen it for a few years now. Maybe someone will get the movie for me on DVD.... I absolutely love this movie. Yes, it is a chick flick, but some men might find it entertaining. I wish it would be shown on TV more often. I haven't seen it for a few years now. Maybe someone will get the movie for me on DVD. Hint! ;-) The scenery is amazing in this film --many scenes with flowers growing in fields. The story is enchanting and if you need a good movie to cheer you up -- this would be it. Many good stars in this movie too.
