  • This movie horrified me. It was so good and it annoyed me when people used to tell me it wasn't scary, because they are obviously lying. Also Mischa Barton has a great performance in this movie.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

First time, so twisted and shocking ... you will never forget it. Tom Berenger stars as an amnesiac who investigates his life before a car wreck took his memory, and finds that things were not all they should have been. The promising mystery gets less interesting as the script becomes more perfunctorily complicated, and a crucial plot twist toward the end throws the story onto a different track rather than letting the existing one grow richer through better characters. People don't count as much as surprises do in this film, so in that sense Shattered is a passable potboiler, no more and no less. Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) capably directs, but even he can't work depth into the margins. Solid supporting performances from Greta Scacchi, Bob Hoskins, and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer.

Having grown up not too far from Sleepy Hollow, I was more than familiar with the legend when I first watched this film. But director Tim Burton takes it another step creepier, making it all the more engrossing and intriguing. And, of course, Johnny Depp is the perfect Ichabod Crane, entranced by Christina Ricci's otherwordly countenance.

The suspect is her devoted husband. But viewing the world through the dim glow of the gaslight, it is difficult to tell what is real and what is imagined. The film stars Charles Boyer as Gregory Anton, Ingrid Bergman as Paula Alquist Anton, Joseph Cotten as Brian Cameron, Dame May Whitty as Miss Bessie Thwaites and Angela Lansbury as Nancy Oliver. Gaslight is an extraordinary film, generating its suspense not from an evil lurking in the shadows, but from the psychology of the mind itself. Perhaps one of the first "pure" psychological thrillers, Gaslight, just like Ingrid Bergman's eyes, contains the perfect blend of mystery, suspense, and beauty. An absolute must-see!

He is initially reluctant to help the police. The detective assigned to the murder seems happy to do nothing, leaving the investigation to a prostitute who witnessed the murder and the son of the deceased. In The Last Wave, the keys to an enigmatic murder, as well as baffling disturbances in the weather, are gradually revealed to an Australian lawyer (Richard Chamberlain) within the shadowy, nomadic culture of aborigines living in and around Sydney who until now were presumed to be assimilated into its modern--and white--social fabric. We loved this supernatural thriller and beautifully disturbing gem of a movie. Haunting, relentless and the incredible presence of David Gulpili, the Aboriginal actor makes this film a must-own!

This is one of my favorite movie because of its subject, my love for New Orleans and its cast. It is an intriguing, unusual, beautifully directed, highly atmospheric film that successfully crosses any number of genre: film noir, thriller, mystery, and horror. The plot is simple. In the mid nineteen fifties, a mysterious and slightly sinister business man, Louis Cypher (Robert De Niro), hires Brooklyn gumshoe, Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke), for a missing person case. Angel's investigation, for which he is being paid a princely sum for the time, takes him from Harlem to New Orleans, as he looks for a former crooner named Johnny Favorite, who sometime during the early nineteen forties apparently welched on a business deal with Louis Cypher and hasn't been heard from since. What happens when Angel gets to New Orleans will be infused with voodoo rites, ritual murders and taboo sex. All my favorites.... in a movie that is!!

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s victory at the Oscars for his performance as writer Truman Capote came as no surprise. For the beginning to the end of the film, Hoffman steals the show, showing off his obvious talents as an actor. The underlying story is of Capote’s efforts as a writer for the New Yorker to uncover a community’s reaction to the senseless murder of a family of four in Halcomb, Kansas in 1959. But events take an unexpected turn when he strikes up a complex relationship with the family’s murderers, in particular Perry Smith. The result is his most defining work as an author entitled In Cold Blood. This movie is a must-see.
