The Quiet American
'The Quiet American' is fast, uneasy and brillantly acted and it is hard to imagine a tighter, more gripping adaptation of Graham Greene's 1955 novel. The cynical reporter, Fowler (Michael Caine - brilliant as usual) and the romantic American (Brendan Fraser) compete for Fowler's mistress, a silken Vietnamese beauty named Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen); and the struggle over the woman is meant to echo the struggle for Vietnam.

I like this movie a lot because things don't end perfectly for Julia Roberts. It is a romantic comedy with a more realistic ending.

I love this film! I've seen this ten times and always enjoy it! Modern for the time and Audrey Hepburn was so beautiful! I was lucky enough to see her in person at a film tribute before she died.

This is a wonderful story, showcasing both the lovely direction of Thai director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang and the talented cinematography of Christopher Doyle, who is also known to work with Wong Kar-Wai on his films. The characters are both interesting, and their interactions with each other--the awkwardness of men-women relations coupled with language and culture barriers--are fun to watch. It was a unique treat for me, being a fan of both Thai and Japanese cultures.

i used to live in a remote part of maine where we didn't even have reception to get the basic channels on our television. this was also the days when VCR's had just been invented. i would come home every day in third grade and wat... i used to live in a remote part of maine where we didn't even have reception to get the basic channels on our television. this was also the days when VCR's had just been invented. i would come home every day in third grade and watch this movie because it was one of three movies we had on video. i could watch this movie over and over again, it never gets old to me! it's one of the best musicals EVER made and one of the highlights of gene kelly's career. i fell in love with gene and his singing and dancing and i wanted to dress up in all the fabulous clothes the women wore in the film. it's truly a superb movie and great for all ages!
