The Spanish Prisoner

The Spanish Prisoner

I love David Mamet but I was shocked by how great Steve Martin is as a dramatic actor. If you like complicated and though-provoking puzzle-like films 'The Spanish Prisoner' is highly, highly recommended. Very intriguing and absorbing 'The Spanish Prisoner' is a must see.

  • Quite the thriller I'd say. It has death, sickness, suspense, everything you could ever need in a scary movie.

  • This movie horrified me. It was so good and it annoyed me when people used to tell me it wasn't scary, because they are obviously lying. Also Mischa Barton has a great performance in this movie.

  • This is such a great movie. Truly. It is rare to find movies that touch on such important topics and do it in a way that both entertains and educates. Rent this movie or better yet own it!

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

This is an amazing Peter Jackson film (pre Lord of the RIngs) Jackson's career trajectory really leaves me confused. He went from gory low brow B movies like Bad Taste to mainstream fair like Heavenly Creatures to Lord of the Rings. Consistency, please. Heavenly Creatures is at first a sweet movie about the friendship between two teen girls that moves to being a little odd, to awkward, to disturbing. One of these girls is crazy and takes the other one to crazytown with her.

  • A riveting contemporary film noir starring Russell Crowe before I disliked Russel Crowe. Also with Guy Pearce and Danny DeVito.

  • Great suspense thriller with losts of twists and turns. "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." The movie did a great job living up to this key line.

Memento is that DVD that I am always willing to watch again whenever I encounter a friend who hasn't seen it yet. One of the reasons I can enjoy it over and over is that I seem to have some sort of memory loss problem so I can never remember what comes next and it's always new to me no matter how many times I've seen it before.

The suspect is her devoted husband. But viewing the world through the dim glow of the gaslight, it is difficult to tell what is real and what is imagined. The film stars Charles Boyer as Gregory Anton, Ingrid Bergman as Paula Alquist Anton, Joseph Cotten as Brian Cameron, Dame May Whitty as Miss Bessie Thwaites and Angela Lansbury as Nancy Oliver. Gaslight is an extraordinary film, generating its suspense not from an evil lurking in the shadows, but from the psychology of the mind itself. Perhaps one of the first "pure" psychological thrillers, Gaslight, just like Ingrid Bergman's eyes, contains the perfect blend of mystery, suspense, and beauty. An absolute must-see!
