The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson

George Clooney will topline, and his Smoke House partner Grant Heslov will helm, “Men Who Stare at Goats.” Pic is an adaptation of British journalist Jon Ronson’s book about the U.S. Army’s First Earth Battalion, a unit that was to use paranormal powers. Title refers to the notion that one can kill a goat by staring at it. Script was penned by Brit Peter Straughan (”How to Lose Friends and Alienate People”). The project has been around for some time, but international buyers only just received the script this week as the Cannes fest and market got started. Script topped the 2007 Brit List of best unproduced screenplays. Financing and producing mix, which is still in flux, is expected to include Winchester, BBC Films and Mandate Pictures.

I really want to read this book by activist and social critic Naomi Wolf who explains in very simple language how are democracy is in jeopardy at this very moment. And not from an external threat, but from what the "forefathers" of the U.S. talked about in the Declaration of Independence. A truly patriotic book for those who want to make sure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not compromised and remain the basic tenets of our democracy.

This is a terrific movie from the 80's starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Pheonix that I need to watch again. Ford plays a married man who charismatically lectures on the hypocrisy and corruption of America to anyone who will listen. Especially his family. So He decides to take his family back to nature and live off the land in the rural rainforest of South America. Trouble arises when he buts heads with missionaries and bandits. The movie is kind of told through the eyes of the son played by Pheonix as he sees his father become unglued and his family threatened.

But I guess thats not just the movie... This movie is so ouch. I mean, I knew things were going to be bad going into this movie. And of course it gets worse and worse and worse until you're left broken with all hope in humanity lost. But I guess thats not just the movie but the story of what happened to Brandon Teena, a trangender F to M who was murdered in some podunk town. So if we can divorce the movie from its relation (as accurate or inaccurate as it is) to the actual events and just critic the film, I would say this is a damn good movie. Although Hollywood couldn't bring itself to cast an actual transgender man, I have to say Hilary Swank did a great job. And somebody needs to tell Ms. Swank no matter how many movies she's in where they kill her off, that doesn't guarantee an Oscar.

Gritty, gripping and an utterly magnetic turn by Ryan Gosling (who has done nothing but the highest quality work since this film introduced him). Gosling plays Danny Balint, a neo-nazi skinhead who is living an impossibly contradictory life because he's also a Jew. Violent, articulate and terrifyingly charismatic, Balint's only saving grace (weakness?) is what drives his hatred - his Judaism. This isn't an easy film and saying that is a vast understatement. It's brutally violent, frightening but also important.

Maybe I was too young at the time to read the book, but seeing the movie as an adult didn't make this story easier to swallow. The story is about an ex slave haunted by the trauma and terror of her past life. Having been brutalized savagely by her slave masters, she made a desperate choice which resulted in the death of her own children. Now, with a new life and a teen daughter, she is haunted, literally by a spirit that may have something to do with the mysterious young woman that has just entered her family's life.

This book is insightful, thought provoking- & short! It's embarrassing for me to admit that I'm not a big reader- (the last book I read at my own leisure was "Jurassic Park"), but think this should be required. D'Souza's thinking is powerful & sharp- I wanted to retain every page. It helped me look at history & the world on a whole new level with great depth & fresh perspective that actually makes sense. He writes of current events & international affairs precisely how they are & smoothly paves the way for one to get the big picture. ...A worthwhile read.
