Some Like It Hot (Special Edition)

Billy Wilder's classic comedy stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as a pair of unemployed musicians who inadvertently become witnesses to the St. Valentine Day's Massacre. To escape the wrath of the gangsters, Joe (Curtis) and Jerry (Lemmon) are forced to hit the road in drag, taking the only jobs available with an all-girl band bound for Miami. Enroute, both men fall for lead singer and blond bombshell Sugar Kane, (Marilyn Monroe), but are unable to fulfill their desires for fear of revealing their identity. Joe tries to get around this by adopting a third identity for seduction, that of a shy millionaire who sounds strangely like Cary Grant. Meanwhile Jerry has his own problems, fighting off the advances of Osgood E. Fielding, a real millionaire hypnotized by his/her charms. Some movies are just perfect.

It might be because Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are so incredibly talented and easy on the eyes. It might just be because I'm a sentimental fool and I love love, even when it can go horribly wrong. Whatever the reason, I love this movie.

However, being that I live a single, lonely, depressing life, I never got around watching it. Another bored Saturday found me and this was the only thing On Demand i hadn't seen. So, I clicked it, loved and thought every guy should know that if you have to watch a chick flick, this is the one you should consider.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

  • with a title that's a cynical commentary on life and love, receiving this excellent novel would make me downright swoon. David Foster Wallace is as brilliant as he is crazy, like my perfect imaginary man.
