This book removes the intimidation, offers great insights to the wine simple, to whom I belong, as well as the savvy and great recipesby Joyce Goldestein. All joy, no snobbery. Aerating usually takes awhile and requires some separate glassware-type equipment. Menu comes to the rescue with their line of Decanting Pourers & Aerators. You simply insert the cool, black rubber stopper end into your bottle, and the device, using some smart design, aerates your wine as your pour it into your glass. The spout is designed to be drip free (no more streaks down the bottle!). Reviews are remarkably good, and mine should arrive in a few days so I'll let you know my thoughts :). Just so you know (no site seems to say this) there are 3 versions sold (in increasing price order): Selection, Vignion, and Premium. Selection is all plastic (acrylic) so you can see the air+wine mixing action. Vignion simply has a nice stainless steel base, while the Premium model has plastic to see the mixing with a solid, stainless steel funnel end. As far as I've heard they all work the same. The different versions are just for design purposes (and priced accordingly). You can see pics of all three and a graphic illustrating how they work with the 'Take a closer look' button. UPDATE: Got the 'Selection' model and tried it on a simple bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon I knew well. It works! After pouring through the gizmo, the dense, heavy Cabernet was separated a bit into its constituent flavors, for more detailed tasting and enjoyment.

It makes for a fascinating read, but what I took away from it, other than that a fool and his money are soon parted (even if they can afford to throw it away), is that when dealing with alcohol, price and quality are often entirely disconnected. I'll leave cultural capital to the chumps, and keep my real capital in my pocket.

The seal-cutter is mighty handy, too; no more danger of cut fingers or lead poisoning from using a knife. But if you like wine and would like to learn a little more about it, this is a great book. It's by Matt Skinner, sommelier to Jamie Oliver's (the guy on TV) restaurant. What's best about this book is its absolute lack of airs or pretentiousness. It starts out assuming you know nothing - and that's ok! It is a pretty thorough book if you want to learn about wine, but it does skimp a bit on the details. You will not find an exhaustive list here, or a large comparison of regions and varieties. But you will find everything you need to begin your alcoholic adventure. It has the details on grape to wine, vinter to market, and market to you (and how to choose!) You'll find yourself better educated and know where you stand with wine. Plus it's only $5 :)

Best way I have found is private preserve wine preserver which injects a layer of inert gas (mostly nitrogen, I think) into the open wine bottle so that no new oxygen can get in to oxidize the remaining wine. Pretty ingenious and effective solution to the problem. Totally works and props to whomever thought of it. Weird thing about the spray can is it feels totally empty even though it is full.
