Macally G-S350SUA Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB2.0 Storage Enclosure for 3.5-Inch SATA Hard Drives

Mouthful, eh? Well them's gadgets for you. I had a dilemma. As the digital detritus of my life went on ever expanding, I had trouble finding space to keep it all in. I started buying external hard drives, only to find I needed to buy a new one every year or so as it ran out of space. Enter 'Storage Enclosures'. Basically, these devices are shells with power and data connections. You buy any size hard drive you want, plop it in, and volia! You now have an external hard drive. If you need more space, or your drive dies, you can just plop in any old hard drive and get back to work. I'm using mine for backup, and as my storage needs expand, I won't need to buy a whole new external system - just a drive. There are MANY external enclosures on the market, but I like this one the best. Firstly, it's real sleek - while it's ripped right off of Apple's Mac designs, it has the aluminum heft and precision to back it up. Secondly, it's pretty darn user friendly - a printed quick start guide had my drive installed and ready to go in 5 minutes. Lastly, it's full featured - with USB, Firewire 400 + 800, and eSATA, you won't have trouble connecting this to anything, and you should be pretty future-proofed for awhile. Only cons? No printed manual (the full one's on the CD). You do need to use a screwdriver to install the drive, but EVERY storage enclosure requires that. Besides, what urbanite doesn't like wielding a Philips every now and again? $39, and well worth the investment. There's a USB only one for about $10 less, but you might as well keep all your data options open.
