I love this album, not because William Shatner is the Captain, but because Shatner's tongue-in-cheek vocals are alway filled his trademark melodramatic sincerity that bounce back and forth between beat poetics and comedy. "Seeking Major Tom" could have been grounded by the gravity of the cool pop alternative delivery that performers such as Grace Jones or Lee Hazlewood are known for—and that would have been great, after all guest appearances include Zakk Wylde, Sheryl Crow, Ritchie Blackmore, Lyle Lovett, Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, members of The Strokes, The Kinks, Tangerine Dream, Alice In Chains, Deep Purple, Yes, MC5 and other pop icons—instead Shatner leverages his "Space Cowboy" legacy as a theme for self-parody, which is much more fun. The songs on the "Seeking Major Tom" collection, a bag of sentimental pop-rock standards from the space age are also ripe for for parody, and Shatner makes sure that each one has been spiked with enough ironic moxie to make a Vulcan laugh.

Seems the sound of Kraftwerk has improved this live collection features most of their most familiar songs, but with much more swing, depth, and luster. As far as the cover design is concerned, I like the inner sleeve over the slip cover.

And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quit hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right.

This soundtrack is hot, one of the best films I've seen in a while and it has a twist at the end of the credits that ties it into the Hulk. The Hulk people!! I can wait to the sequel already!
