The Fray - How To Save A Life

The Fray - How To Save A Life

Incredible sound and lyrics

  • It's their first studio album and after 4 more that are mostly spectacular, Castaways and Cutouts remains my favorite. To me it's their purest "indie rock sound." You know, back when indie rock use to actually be indie rock.

  • This was such a craze. I remember kids walking down the hall in their wide leg jeans singing Paranoid Android and Karma Police. We were so cool.

Then I realized when this album came out in '92 I was 14 and too young to appreciate it. As I got older, the R.E.M. that was blaring in my ears were songs like Losing My Religion (which I still don't like). Now that I'm older I can revisit this album and truly appreciate it for songs like: Sweetness Follows Star Me Kitten Try Not to Breathe I do like Everybody Hurts but unfortunately its beaten over our heads, ears, and eyes. Thank MTV. Great album all around.

  • After the slow burn of Final Straw, Snow Patrol finally get the exposure that they've been building up to over the years. Their pretty ballads are like Coldplay, but with some heart and sophistication.

Suddenly, the band that had always looked to England became obsessed with their American roots. Still has some really catchy songs that wend their way into your subconsciousness. Even if you're a bit disappointed that there's no "Mr. Brightside", you'll find something to love here.

From the classical "Concerto in G" to the electronic sounds of New Order's "Ceremony" to the hard rocking "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, this soundtrack has a little bit of everything. Somehow the diverse elements sync together to become one cohesive whole . . . and a fabulous soundtrack.

Her he eschews more mainstream pop music to explore a slightly darker side. Employing some really great comrades in legendary African drummer Tony Allen, ex-Clash bassist Paul Simonon, and the Verve's guitarist Simon Tong. Given the rhythm section, there definitely could have been stronger African influences, but it's still a really interesting album, with some great songs on it. And bully to him for getting Paul Simonon to come out of retirement!
