Much to my visual pleasure, the Aussie artist SKAFFS has illustrated his first tale for kids at heart. No wonder it blooms with retina-popping delight and serves up cute critters of the land down under. Here innocence is no reason not to explore the unknown, not an excuse to fear it - those were the days! Plus it has an childlike buoyancy which allows anything to happen under the sun. In an age of troubles, SKAFFS art washes over my eyeballs like a cool breeze and makes bedtimes go down silky smooth.

  • Yoshitomo Nara is one of my absolute favorite illustrators, so I've been excited to pick up his very first childrens' book. I love the sweet story and expressive art.

I bought it under the auspices that it was for our daughter but really it was for me. The scratchy inked lines with impressionistic washes of color are gorgeous but the greatest thing about Mr. Grimly's style is the unique ways he allows his free-flowing lines and splatters to abstract the figures...it is a style perfect for the subject matter - namely two monsters who live in Booville and can't stand each other because one is tidy and one is messy. The felix and oscar relationship, no surprise, blossams into love and friendship by the end but along the way, we are treated to all kinds of disgusting verse and fantastically rendered monsters and creatures. It is a great book, a great book for kids with nothing offensive or questionable (i feel)...but then again, I bought it mainly because I wanted to look at the illustrations while I read to our daughter...

The perfect retelling of the classic fairytale for the little ghoul in your life. It is fairly macabre (she loses her whole foot after the ball when it snaps off on the stairs) and of course all the main characters are skeletons or corpses but the illustrations are whimisical enough and the rhyming verse silly enough that none of it feels threatening...

Now I use it to cheer up and get a quick laugh whenever I'm having a bad day. ... I remember owning this book as a kid, so I was excited to see it in a store recently. This collection of short stories were my first introduction to Dave Eggers, and I'm oh so grateful to that former co-worker of mine who let me pick up the book and read 1 story. I promptly purchased the book following that experience. Since then, I've reread the various stories numerous times. The best thing about short stories written by Dave Eggers is his ability to truly capture an emotion and portray in such a beautiful, relative way.
