The Amish traditions of crafting and design simplicity are alive and well in Michigan. Ten years ago, Ann Gordon, a Web designer at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering, wanted to buy some "real wood" bookcases and finally had them made by an Amish craftsperson. That was the beginning of Branch Hill Joinery, which produces custom furniture using solid woods and old-time construction methods. "Our furniture and cabinetry designs are largely Shaker or Mission style," says Gordon. "They express the themes of Amish life: function, grace and devotion."

It's apparently about where when Amish kids turn 16, they're set free to indulge in a lifestyle of whatever bad things they want to get into and then decide for themselves if they want to return back to being Amish.

This is a must see documentary about Amish teens. When they turn 16, they go through a period called 'Rumspringa' where they get indulge in the outside world in order to decide whether they want to remain in the church as adults. ... When they turn 16, they go through a period called 'Rumspringa' where they get indulge in the outside world in order to decide whether they want to remain in the church as adults. Pretty cool, huh? Rather than coercing kids through fear they allow them the freedom to experience and choose. Unfortunately, many of the kids go overboard (some even becoming drug addicts), however they demonstrate a kind of calm lucidity and mature rationalization of their circumstances for being, afterall, American teens. Its really interesting.

Amish-made, heirloom-quality, cherry wood mission bench. When it comes to furniture, the Amish have it. Just because they're Amish doesn't mean they can't be kickin' it like their cooler cousins. Featuring an Amish dude on a tricked out bike (non-motor variety, of course). Best on black, although available in a heather ringer.

The highlight of the trip was a visit to the Hammond's Pretzel factory and we would always return with a... The highlight of the trip was a visit to the Hammond's Pretzel factory and we would always return with a couple of 5 lb cans of Hammond's Pretzels. These are the absolutely best pretzels in the country.
