Philadelphia Print Shop

Philadelphia Print Shop

An alternative to the artsy Manayunk neighborhood in Philadelphia is the dreamlike Chestnut Hill, the heart of which is tidy Germantown Avenue. First stop on this cobblestone-lined street is the Philadelphia Print Shop, founded in 1982 by Donald H. Cresswell and Christopher W. Lane, a Library of Congress veteran and budding philosopher, respectively. The duo, whom you might have seen on <i>Antiques Road Show</i>, has amassed a collection of prints dating from the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Woodcuts, engravings and lithographs feature famous Philadelphians, botanicals and antique maps.

Although my son's artwork currently takes center stage on most of the walls in my home, I would love to add a few maps to the collection. The artwork, old, new, photographic, hand-rendered, always seems timeless to me . . . and reminds me of the essential interconnectedness of our universe. These vintage maps from Style de Vie are a gorgeous addition to any collection, however large or small. And a splendid ode to the Earth itself.

They were made when the world was something magical, and no one knew what might lay over the horizon. Back then going to sea was risky business, and you might not be the same when you came back. Show your love of the old sea-faring spirit with this tee. Normally I'm not a fan of cream or white shirts, but there's no other way to properly display this, unless it involves a pan filled with tea and a few matches.

A long time ago I was looking to buy a genuine Civil War map for a history buff and found my way (after hours and hours of searching) to this site. The owner was a doll to work with and they did a beautiful job framing it. The map is beautiful and sure to increase in value in a few more years once it hits its 150th birthday. To this day it's still one of the favorite gifts I've ever given and the receiver was especially pleased. This is a great gift idea as they have maps from all over the world and other goodies, like a retro ad and art gallery. If you want something unique that's sure to surprise this is a great place to shop. If you know a man that is hard to shop for (dad's anyone?) or want to teach your kids some family history this is the best place to find something quality.
