In Marrakech, Morocco, the Khalid Art Gallery, where photos of celebrity shoppers—model Kate Moss, soccer star Zinedine Zidane, Hillary and Bill Clinton—attest to its reputation among the international elite. Owner Khalid el Gharib is the city’s leading purveyor of atmospheric furniture and accessories: eighteenth-century North African ceramics, Mogul-era marble fountains from India, antique embroidered silk portières, Syrian chairs and cabinets inlaid with snow-white bone (Naomi Campbell bought a lot for her bedroom). The stock of the two-story shop is more broadly orientalist than it is specifically Moroccan, an encyclopedic array of exotica from across the Arab world.

It’s an interior shop that have a lot of new merchandise versus antiques, and it’s more mass market, which is fine. It’s a great store. I do a lot of business there.

Fortunately, his inventory and staff are both safe, as he explained by telephone from his Paris flat. Smith is the leading dealer for painted French antiques in New Orleans, and even now, in the aftermath of the hurricane, he can’t stop selling. His first sale after Katrina—an early- eighteenth-century painted tray—came from a dealer who had ordered from his website after having visited his gallery. But soniatantiques.com is as popular among designers who have never been to New Orleans as to those who have. Until she discovered Smith’s virtual shop, Laurie Steichen, a Los Angeles designer and lover of eighteenth-century French antiques, found working in contemporary-leaning Southern California frustrating, to say the least. A Louis XVI sofa shown on Soniat House’s website satisfied her recent quest for the right piece to round out the sitting room of an art collector. “The finish had the perfect amount of worn gilt, and the carving on the legs was meticulous,” says Steichen. “And it was photographed meticulously from every angle. If Soniat carries it, you know it’s going to be very special.” Soniat will be open again for business by mid-October, says Smith, and will start shipping in November

Eberhardt & Son Inc. has the ring of authenticity. Established in 1888, Philadelphia’s oldest antique shop is now run by William Eberhardt in an 1856 Italian Renaissance town house, its glorious woodwork and plaster details overshadowed only by the innumerable porcelain and glass pieces lining shelves and floors. Eberhardt sells Japanese cloisonné and Satsuma from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. It is also the principal restorer for Lladro pieces; fixing the figurines takes up most of Eberhardt’s time. Your local porcelain restorer probably trained at the side of an Eberhardt or an Eberhardt protégé, and it wouldn’t be overstatement to say this Walnut Street refuge is keeping the craft alive in the United States. How’s that for a sign of preeminence?

Samplers start around $400 and often go for ten times that amount. The shop also carries American and English furniture, such as faux-figured chests and sets of Klizmos chairs.

The Foundation, in collaboration with such manufacturers as Baker Furniture and Mottahedeh, faithfully reproduces antiques from private houses as well as from its own collections. The selection includes cast-metal shutter dogs (decorative hardware that holds shutters and comes in the shape of shells, anchors, butterflies and other forms), English Regency chairs, and Chinese export porcelain in the Blue Willow and Sacred Bird and Butterfly patterns. The Foundation also produces a paint palette, Colors of Historic Charleston, so you can do your own exporting and introduce a bit of Charleston back home.

Past two recessed display windows (one holding four demure gilded ballroom chairs and the other, antique cherubs with origami-like folded paper roses), Steiner stands behind a weathered, antique grocer’s cabinet from Amsterdam, stroking his hefty nine-pound Chihuahua. Dark wood tables display an assortment of carved ivory bracelets and candle snuffers, Japanese geisha wigs and glass candelabra. Each of the grocer’s drawers holds more treasures: pince-nez, lacquered trays, Chinese sugar labels, silver pen quills. Steiner’s collectibles are not limited to his shop; items from his personal collection exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum last summer are still on display.
