Segundo by Juana Molina

Segundo by Juana Molina

This has become my top CD in my jukebox at the moment. She's from Argentina, and sings the most catchy melodies. It's much more upbeat than Tres Cosas, but just as lyrical and delightful. When I listen to Juana Molina, my creativity is sparked, and I end up making much more interesting dishes and candy.

  • I love Los Fabulosos Cadillacs my most favorite South American Rock Band. They originate from Buenos Aires, Argentina and my favorite album is vasos vacios (empty cups). Mercedes Sosa passed today at 74, but her music will live forever. Forced to leave her native country of Argentina to Europe when the military government went after the activists, artists and anyone who they thought were dissidents of their government. This story happened in the 70s when thousands of young people were slaughtered and dump into lagoons and in the ocean. Poet and activist Victor Jara was also killed around this time in his native Chile. These were rough times in South America, the struggle for many is still very much alive today for many of the children and parents of those taken away 30 plus years ago.

  • After hearing Juana Molina on KCRW, I saw her in concert at McCabe's Cuitars in Santa Monica and decided she's a little crazy. In spite of that, or perhaps because of that, she weaves some haunting, inventive, ethereal melodies.
