Rene Daniels

One of my favorite monograms of one of my favorite painters.

  • Marcel Dzama is one of my favorite artists. The book "Behind Every Curtain" provides a kind of sketchbook companion or dossier on the making of his latest film, A Game of Chess.

ISBN: 9788862081009 / ISBN10: 8862081006 Indian haute-couture is conquering catwalks worldwide. This isn't a book about saris and salwars, it's a book about Indian high-fashion and how it's creating global styles without losing sight of its traditions/background. This book documents the scene, with an in-depth look at designers as diverse as Fightercock (a collaboration between Abhishek Gupta and Nandita Basu, who claim on one of their t-shirts that "The Revolution must wear Fightercock"), AtpuG varuaG (a.k.a Gaurav Gupta, who won Breakthrough Designer of the Year at the MTV and Zoom Style Awards in 2006) and Kavita Bharthia (who is known for both Indian and Western styles, impeccably finished on hand looms, which incorporate cottons and silks, scarves, stoles and knits). Other featured designers include Gayatri Khanna, Anamika Khanna, Small Shop, Anuj Sharma, Ashish N Soni, Ayesha Depala, CUE, Deepika Govind, Drashta Sarvaiya, Falguni & Shane Peacock, Manish Arora, Nachiket Barve, Namrata Joshipura, Nimita Rathod, Nitin Bal Chauhan, Prashant Verma, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Ranna Gill, My Village, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Savio Jon, Shantanu & Nikhil, Shantanu Goenka, Swapnil Shinde, Varun Bahl, Wendell Rodricks and Bounipun. Contemporary Indian fashion offers a host of experimental techniques for textiles, pattern cutting and sculptural draping, as well as the mixing of natural and synthetic fibers and unlikely juxtapositions such as jersey or chiffon with leather. A definite book for anyone interested in contemporary Indian fashion and fashion designers! Perfect for the fashion novice and aficionados, alike. x.

Her assemblages of found and constructed objects carry a provisional quality, a wry sense of humor and an all-embracing intelligence. Playing with materials ranging from plinth, pedestal and corrugated cardboard to plastic ketchup bottles, insulated travel mugs and Barbie's wheelchair-bound friend, Harrison creates colorful, canny, thought-provoking constructions that are worthy peers of Rauschenberg's Combines. This volume, the most comprehensive monograph of Harrison's sculpture, video and painting to date.

Anne Hoenig's paintings place single female figures in what seem to be either destructive or sexual situations about to happen. A superb modeler of the female form, Hoenig pays homage to the shadowy seductions of film noir for her similarly ominous scenarios. Existing on the lip of anticipation, her paintings inhabit an enigmatic state of suspense. Brilliant!

UK photographer Sarah Pickering's Explosions, Fires and Public Order is a visually arresting glimpse into the secret world of civil defense. Combining four series, the book begins with Public Order, a project exploring the Metropolitan Police Public Order Training Centre, a simulated urban environment near London where officers rehearse responses to imagined scenarios of civic unrest. The Explosions series documents the tactical use of controlled explosions by the British military, designed to add realistic stress to training exercises and familiarize soldiers with various munitions. Fire Series and Incident, Pickering's most recent series, were produced while she was an artist in residence at the UK Fire Training College. While there, she photographed blazes that were set inside meticulously and elaborately constructed home interiors, as well as the stark, charred remnants of fake urban settings after the scenario fires had been put out. Pickering's projects reflect an aspect of the current zeitgeist: global terrorism matched with omnipresent anxiety. "My work explores the idea of imagined threat and response, and looks at fear and planning for the unexpected, merging fact and fiction, fantasy and reality."

  • I just think everyone needs to take a long look and listen to the Nick Cave's Soundsuits.

This sophisticated artist’s book, with custom-cut cover and partially exposed binding, documents John Bock’s 2006 action, "Maltreated Frigate"--the height as well as the culmination of this rising German artist’s performative work. Here, Bock’s vision comes to life in a multitude of color illustrations composed and collaged by the artist. The libretto, printed in its entirety, explodes in linguistic fireworks and tumbles down the printed page, solid in its earthiness and ready to be constructed into a jumble of bizarre and whimsical neologisms--vivid testimony to the artist’s zest for expression. "Maltreated Frigate" was performed as a spectacle in 10 scenes, a collision course of rock opera, Theater of the Absurd, animated sculpture and puppet show. This raucous volume invites the reader to accompany the artist and his protagonists along their tour-de-force, stream-of-consciousness action. It is a violent ride on a machine from hell, steered by an idiosyncratic inner logic.

In the form of a geographic atlas, this volume initiates dialogue between art and other disciplines such as the sciences, sociology and politics. Four hundred pages of color images drawn from art, architecture and film are annotated with historical, thematic and iconographic information and a mosaic of texts formed from quotes by artists, scientists and intellectuals, as well as encyclopedic entries, art reviews and short biographies. An entry on "The Bizarre," for example, is illustrated with works by Paul McCarthy and Jake and Dinos Chapman. One of the goals of any atlas is to survey the world in order to better explore it--seeing and naming a phenomenon in the world is just as imperative as seeking to define the meaning of that phenomenon.
