Live Rust - Neil Young

Live Rust - Neil Young

Cinammon Girl, The Needle and the Damage Done, SUGAR MOUNTAIN, After the Gold Rush, Tonight's the Night - this album is QUITE the collection of some of Young's best hits. "In addition to the mellow songs, there are some louder, electric ones that are incredible as well, with Cinnamon Girl and Like a Hurricane being good examples. This album definitely has the 'live' thing going for it, and when you hear these cuts you won't settle for the studio versions anymore - it's cool to hear Neil connect with the audience - "When I get big, I'm gonna get an electric guitar. When I get real big". I kid you not - there is not a dud on the album. It is just incredible, and capable of providing pleasure worth orders of magnitude more than its price. I actually am typing this review because I would love to think someone bought this album as a result of it and enjoyed it as much as I have over the years (in CD format now, of course!)" If you are bright, you'll notice the title is a play on the Hippocratic Oath. The set was recorded live on April 20 -yes, 420, both Benson and ARTISTdirect get the joke- at the Acme Comedy Company in Minneapolis. The release on Comedy Central Records comes with a bonus DVD including full, uncensored versions of his two Comedy Central Presents half-hour specials. Uncensored? Now you are speaking my language. Though he is sometimes "too trunk to dweet," Benson has amassed over 70,000 followers on Twitter with lines including "I have HIV. But don't worry, I still get to draw four more scrabble tiles." Don't be fooled by his laid-back delivery - Benson is as sharp as comics come and his jokes appeal to smokers and non-smokers alike. Covering everything from the importance of time-saving abbreviations such as "deets" to his 2010 "Pot The Vote" tour in California, the former Marijuana-Logues star gets audiences high on laughs. Lady Gaga is a theatrical dance-pop performer whose debut single, the international chart-topping hit "Just Dance," established her as an up-and-coming superstar upon its release in 2008. Born Stefani Germanotta on March 28, 1986, the Yonkers native attended Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private all-girl Catholic school in Manhattan, before proceeding to study music at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts at age 17. Influenced by flamboyant glam rockers such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury (she would later draw her stage name from the Queen song "Radio Ga-Ga") as well as '80s dance-poppers such as Madonna and Michael Jackson, she began playing the piano at a young age and started writing original material as a teenager. In 2007, she began to make a name for herself on the downtown Manhattan club scene with a performance art show billed as Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue (co-featuring Lady Starlight; born Colleen Martin, a DJ and makeup professional), and music industry insiders began to take note. While Lady Gaga was initially signed to Def Jam in 2007, nothing came of that association, and ultimately it was pop-rap superstar Akon who took her under his wing, signing her to his vanity label Kon Live in association with Interscope Records. In addition to working for Interscope as an in-house songwriter, Lady Gaga began preparing the launch of her solo career. Her debut single, "Just Dance," was released to radio in April 2008, and her full-length album debut, The Fame, followed in August. Featuring fellow Akon affiliate Colby O'Donis, "Just Dance" slowly gathered momentum throughout 2008's latter half. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in August, at which time it had already become a massive club hit, but it didn't reach number one until January 2009. Internationally, the song proved similarly popular, reaching the Top Ten throughout much of Western Europe and beyond. In the wake of Lady Gaga's international breakthrough success with "Just Dance," the follow-up single "Poker Face" was an even larger hit, topping singles charts across the board with its combination of pop melodicism and club-worthy production. Two additional tracks -- "LoveGame" and "Paparrazi" -- also cracked the Top Ten, and The Fame was still enjoying a spot on the Billboard Top 40 when its follow-up, The Fame Monster, appeared in November 2009. Although originally planned as a bonus disc (to be packaged alongside The Fame in a deluxe edition of Lady Gaga's debut), The Fame Monster was quickly expanded to eight tracks, thus warranting its own release. Meanwhile, the leadoff single "Bad Romance" became Gaga's fifth consecutive Top Ten single. - Quoted from Amazon

Maroon 5 have released two multi-platinum studio albums (2002’s Songs About Jane and 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long), scored a string of hit singles (“This Love,” “She Will Be Loved,” “Harder to Breathe,” “Sunday Morning,” “Makes Me Wonder”), won three Grammy Awards, and sold 15 million albums around the world. Now the Los Angeles quintet is back with its third-studio album, entitled Hands All Over — a killer hybrid of rock, pop, funk, and R&B, that showcases the band’s considerable strengths: buoyant, unforgettable melodies, sleek, stylish grooves, charged lyrics about turbulent relationships, and crisp, dynamic performances. Adam Levine, the band’s lyricist, began writing the songs that appear on Hands All Over after winding down from a world tour in support of It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. A few months later, Maroon 5 received a phone call from veteran studio wizard Robert John “Mutt” Lange (AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars), who had heard that Maroon 5 were beginning to write a new album and expressed an interest in producing it. “We didn’t even talk to anyone else,” Levine says. “Mutt is undeniably one of the most successful producers who’s ever lived.” Levine’s first performing experience — in fact the event that ignited his desire to become a singer and musician — actually involves Lange. The story goes like this: 20 years ago, when Levine was 10, he attended a friend’s birthday party “at one of those places in the San Fernando Valley where the kids dress up in rock’n’roll gear and lip-sync their favorite songs,” he says. Levine chose the Def Leppard classic “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” “I knew I could sing because my music teacher told me I had a voice, but I had never really performed before. I grabbed the mic and just went for it. Afterwards I knew that I’ve got to do this for the rest of my life. That’s what got the whole ball rolling for me.” The classic anthem “Pour Some Sugar On Me” was, of course, famously produced by Lange. “If that’s not a full 360, I don’t know what is,” Levine says. “It doesn’t get more circular than that.” - Quoted from Amazon

The stunning new effort by internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter David Gray -- begins with those evocative and somewhat mysterious words. What follows is an extraordinary song cycle of rare and timeless power that bears a rather fitting title. As people today may or may not remember, the word “foundling” is defined as “an infant found after its unknown parents have abandoned it.” And as Gray puts it with a warm laugh, “Foundling sort of arrived at my door without my asking it to, so it felt very appropriate for this album.” In a sense, Foundling also marks another notable arrival -- the second coming of David Gray’s own second coming -- and one that truly “sprung like a wild orchid” in its own right. By 2005, Gray had already enjoyed what has been a rather distinguished career as a singer-songwriter and recording artist, having sold more than 12 million albums, including his global left-field smash, 1998’s White Ladder, which remains the single best selling album in Irish history. Gray had by this point already won two Ivor Novello Awards, a Q award, two Brit nominations and a GRAMMY nomination. But not a man or artist content to ever rest on his laurels, Gray decided that the time has come to shake things up in a significant way. So in 2006, David Gray decided to disband his longtime backing group, and to attempt to reconnect with his music before recording his excellent 2009 album Draw The Line with a new group of players at his studio The Church. “Draw the Line was essentially about the band, and four people playing together in a room,” says Gray. “But you can’t just keep going for unlimited takes. So on days when I felt everyone was getting a bit worn down and frayed at the edges -- and that it might be good to give everyone a little space -- I’d go into the studio on my own or maybe with one other person. I’d either work on tracks we already recorded or try to record other songs with just me on piano or guitar. That’s a lot of what eventually became Foundling. In essence, foundling became an alternate musical universe to Draw The Line. As Gray puts it,“ Foundling was an album done in slices of time in between band recording sessions. Eventually, I had the thought of recording and then mixing two separate albums during the same time period, so I then went back and took a closer look at the tracks and recorded a few overdubs and attempted to add a few finishing touches so that they sounded more complete. That’s how Foundling became like a tapestry that I hung on the other side of The Church. And I kept walking over and making little marks on it, and before you knew it, what started off as a side project was holding my attention as well as the main work.” - Quoted from Amazon

Universal Motown Records singer-songwriter-producer KEM has announced that he will release his third album, Intimacy, preceded by a series of online promotional videos that will reintroduce him to the marketplace by offering an intimate preview of what’s to come. The new CD is the Detroit native’s long awaited follow-up to his critically acclaimed and certified gold 2005 disc, KEM Album II. Intimacy was inspired by KEM’s deeply personal lessons on intimacy and it will allow fans to experience him unlike ever before musically, lyrically, and visually. For the first time in his career, KEM will lay all of his cards on the table and grant fans the opportunity to get up close and personal while delivering a 10-song collection of timeless music for the grown and sexy. Intimacy features vocal and production collaborations with the likes of Grammy-winning soul diva Jill Scott and the late Motown legend David J. Van dePitt, who famously produced Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterpiece, What’s Going On. Scott delivers enchanting verses of spoken word in “Golden Days,” while Van dePitt arranged the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s string section on the first single, a gorgeous ballad called “Why Would You Stay.” Los Angeles producer Rex Rideout (Luther Vandross, Angie Stone) also joined KEM in the studio to help round out the Intimacy listening experience. The result is a richer sound buttressed by classical instruments and a greater range of musical styles that will certainly expand KEM’s audience by garnering success across multiple formats, including pop, R&B, and urban adult contemporary. - Quoted from Amazon

Anybody who likes the sounds of Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Freddie Jackson, Al Green and Marvin Gaye is going to feel blessed for discovering Randy Wilson! For singer and songwriter Randy Wilson, a career in music has been a dream deterred. This talented R&B artist is completing his second project “Up Close and Personal” for which he wrote all the songs, and is looking forward to the future. He is poised and ready to step back onto the music scene and realize his dreams of success. Growing up in Oakland, Califronia, his interest in music came about when he was 8 years old, along with football and baseball. A short while later his interest in music developed into a passion. His childhood friend’s older brother played drums in a group called “Bits & Pieces”. He was later chose to be the lead singer. The group performed at small nightclubs and hotels around the greater Bay Area for several years. The band eventually parted ways and Randy decided to pursue his interest in recording. His musical influences were artists such as Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross. He also started his own small record label called “Regal Records” with help from a friend. Three months later he recorded his first single, “Something Inside”. The single was well received and garnered local radio play and also captured the attention of local promoter Paul Mack, Jr. He was soon opening shows for artists such as the Temptations, The OJays, Denise Williams, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Toni! Tony! Tone!, Roy Ayers, Stanley Clarke and many others. His 1987 CD project created a buzz with local promoters and radio so he began shopping for a record deal. Every major record label that Randy hit, the feedback was “Wow, you sound just like Luther”. While Randy loved that people said he sounded like Luther Vandross, his goal was for listeners to recognize and appreciate his own style of vocals. Letting his passion, sensitivity and vulnerability set him apart, Randy began honing his signature sound with the support of his family and inspiration from his mother, who is also a singer. One day a friend passed him a tape with music that “changed everything”. He bagan writing his own lyrics about experiences with family, friends and the daily challenges of life. “Love is such a powerful emotion and life is a gift from God. Music drives me,” says Randy. Randy recently shared the stage at the Conga Room in LA with R&B greats Stevie Wonder, Lenny Williams, D’Wayne Wiggins of Toni! Tony! Tone!, Jamie Fox and Raphael Saadiq in a benefit fundraiser and received kudos for his performance.

Perhaps the most famous of Hendrix's releases, he was at his PRIME when they recorded this version of Purple Haze. "When Jimi Hendrix walked onto the stage at Monterey he was relatively unknown in the United States. When he walked off the stage, popular music had been completely transformed. The American debut of the Jimi Hendrix Experience at Monterey isn't just the most exciting live rock concert ever recorded; it's also one of the most significant moments in the history of modern American music. Hendrix took the music world completely by storm and turned it on its head. His influence today is greater than ever, 41 years after the fact. Days after the mind-boggling "set the guitar on fire" stunt, Hendrix was a household word. The set kicks off fast and hard with Killing Floor, one wonders how Mitch Mitchell (drums) could keep up without injuring himself. Next up, Foxey Lady, soon to be a standard. The treatment of Bob Dylan's beautiful ballad, Like A Rolling Stone, is compelling and soulful. Rock Me Baby is simply beyond belief; it throws off heat like a jet engine. A hard-edged version of Hey Joe comes next; it's blues all right, but psychedelic blues. By the time Hendrix gets to Can You See Me? it's clear that he and his cronies are all settled down and solidly in the groove, this one speeds past like a bullet. The Wind Cries Mary is handled gently and carefully, it's a great song and provides a welcome break from the mayhem. Purple Haze has never sounded ruder, more demented, and incoherent - it is riveting. If you have any imagination at all, think about what this music must have sounded like to people who'd been nursed on The Platters, The Four Freshmen, and The Beach Boys. We are now completely accustomed to the influence Hendrix has had and it's easy to forget that when this was recorded what Hendrix was doing wasn't merely new, it was earth shattering. As to the closer, Wild Thing, I remember the Troggs version, sort of a frat house crowd pleaser. Hendrix takes it into the stratosphere; in many ways it's the highlight of the performance. Burning the guitar was theatrical genius, really, after you've just invaded the greatest nation on earth and conquered it in one night, what else is there to do?"
