Delonghi Bar 14 Café Treviso

I've relied on this wonderful machine near-daily for over 18 months and it continues to produce great espresso and cappuccino whenever I need my caffeine fix. The Cafe Trevisio checks all the right boxes: a full 15 bar pump, filters for 1 or 2 cups, a steam nozzle and variable steam control dial, tamping pad and a decent size water tank. It takes a few shots to get the art of tamping right to suit your taste and to get the hang of heating the milk to the right temperature (or invest in a thermometer as I have done) but once you've nailed it you can impress all your friends with your skills as a barista! Reassuringly, you can obtain spare parts of almost every bit of this machine, so even if the dishwasher eats one of the filters or something you can pick up a replacement at a sensible price. If you love coffee and need a machine that won't let you down you could do a lot worse than the Cafe Treviso.

A stainless steel pitcher works best. It will dissipate some of the heat, allowing more time to infuse air into the milk before the milk gets too hot. Use a thermometer to get the milk to the correct temperature of about 65°C.
