Designed in 1930 by Robert Dudley Best, the BestLite became an icon of reliability when it was photographed on Churchill’s desk in his air raid shelter. The lamp has been in continuous production since, but neglectful marketing brought its distributor to the brink of bankruptcy. In 1989, Danish designer Gubi Olsen, having seen the lamp in a Copenhagen shoe shop, sought the Scandinavian distribution rights. Thousands of Danish homes and businesses now own a BestLite and in 2004, GUBI A/S assumed control of the lamp’s design repertoire, manufacture and marketing. The rest of the world may soon be embracing the Best.
