The Children's Inn at NIH

I worked at NIH (the National Institutes of Health) in Maryland for three years. I volunteered at the Children's Inn for about a year and a half. The Children's Inn provides a place for pediatric patients and the families of pediatric patients to stay near the hospital. There are rooms for the families as well as shared kitchen spaces, a computer room, several toy and game rooms, and a small library. This lets the families of patients be with the family member who is receiving treatment, but not have to live in a hotel room, or drive miles to see the patient. Also, sharing space with other families lets people form a support network that might not otherwise exist. The Children's Inn is an important part of NIH and it is run entirely on donated funds. If you are interested in volunteering, donating money or donating goods, take a look at their website.

That's the question asked by this amazing company. If cancer, world hunger, autism diabetes, animal cruelty, global warming, AIDS and more are among your answers, they also give you a stylishly cool way to do something about it: eco-friendly (made from recycled tires and metal) bracelets that only cost $10- HALF of which goes to the charity of your choice. I lost my dad to cancer a decade ago so that's one of the three bracelets I just purchased. The holidays are about giving... what better thing to give than hope? Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger playing a combative mother and daughter who see each other through various ups and downs in love and loss, and most especially through a terminal illness endured by Winger's character. Jack Nicholson deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a free-spirited astronaut who backs away from a romance with MacLaine and then returns in the clutch.
