The artwork, old, new, photographic, hand-rendered, always seems timeless to me . . . and reminds me of the essential interconnectedness of our universe. These vintage maps from Style de Vie are a gorgeous addition to any collection, however large or small. And a splendid ode to the Earth itself.

This atlas reveals the original names and meanings of familiar places around the globe, as painstakingly researched by two German cartographers. Whether it's Chicago's original name of "Stink Onion" or, even better, Yucatan -- which translates in Mayan to "I don't understand," this is a work of genius.

Normally I'm not a fan of cream or white shirts, but there's no other way to properly display this, unless it involves a pan filled with tea and a few matches.
