Jennifer Hudson – “If this isn’t love” off the “Jennifer Hudson” album

Recovering from the tragic murders of her mother, brother, and cousin, Jennifer Hudson returns with a self-entitled album and a critically acclaimed single, "If This Isn't Love." Music reporter David Balls remarks "If This Isn't Love' is a delicate love song that finds Hudson in her natural comfort zone. 'God sent me an angel from above, that's going to love me for life,' she sings soulfully, with recent events making the lyrics particularly resonant. Combining modish beats with a cool, breezy chorus, 'If This Isn't Love' ...has an understated charm that's hard to quibble with." (Digitalspy.com) Listening to the song, I find myself an audience to Hudson's heart.

With songs like Divorce Song and Fuck and Run, you know a young girl growing up in the 90s would absolutely be gung-ho for this album. Unfortunately, the young girls grew up and so did she, and her career, well does she have one? I heard she attempted to come back but its not there, the angst the fear that makes great music. Middle age can be cruel!

But I was very pleasantly surprised by this collection as each artist (all very skilled and true artists) made each track their own. They made them new again. The songs kept their original flavor, while bringing something new, whether it was singing in a different key, adding harmonies, adding riffs, or giving the song a new feel. My favorite was Kevon Edmonds' rendition of "Never Let You Down." It was so good, I think that might have to be my wedding song someday! Kem's rendering of "Golden Time of Day" sent chills down my spine. I loved the new feel added to Musiq's "Silky Soul" and "I Wanna Thank You" with The Clark Sisters. Raheem DeVaughn knocked me out with his vocals on "We Are One," and Ledisi proved why she is a true artist and a powerful singer on "Happy Feelins." Mint Condition, the only band on the LP, turned in a solid performance that paid tribute to the old while making it new, while Joe and Avant were smooth on their tracks. The only track I wasn't impressed with was Mary J. Blige's "Before I Let Go." That's a hard song to remake and have people accept, but Mary didn't even sound like she was trying. But the song is not unbearable. This CD was so good, I HAD to write a review!”– J Double U (Amazon.com Review)

Several tracks, such as “The Invader” and “Primetime Hero” are all an '80s rock lover could ever want — and these two tracks really stand out on the album in terms of “seriousness.” Several other titles, like “Pump Energy Man” and “Power US” also stand out — but more so due to their extreme nuttiness if nothing else (are we really supposed to take hard rock songs about eating and exercising right seriously?).” - Luigi Bastardo

While faithful to the originals, these tracks vary in many ways, both in the colors their voices bring to the harmonies and in the styles of guitar work on display. Both performers clearly love the era and the radio singles they sang along to when they were young. Their emotional fidelity is as remarkable as their technical proficiency, and the fact that both have retained their youthful attitudes and voices in middle age (Hoffs is 50!) amazes this aging baby-boomer. Both CDs are a joy to listen to, and we can only hope that the two will give us further volumes devoted to the 80s, when Hoffs' group The Bangles had their heyday, and to the 90s, when Sweet made his commercial breakthrough. I also recommend the bonus tracks that you can download for this album, which include ten more interesting and adventuresome cuts:” – T.Davis “Tom Davis” (Amazon.com Review)

Their second release ‘Ocean, Meet the Valley’ is a little darker, a little deeper, and more dynamic yet retains some of the warm, catchy hooks that characterized their first release. They teamed up with engineer/producer Chris Grainger with one goal: to bring out the best in each other. Working long hours over 10 days, they bottled up a year of life, love, loss, and dreams to create a record with no pretentions and as rich as the gulf air. Sonically, this record possesses vintage tones through the use of 70’s era equipment and concepts. Acoustic guitars and warm, gritty electrics are intertwined with the smooth chime of a Rhodes or the haunt of a Hammond. Tones find their way to and fro through the structure of the song enough to keep things interesting without overshadowing the lyrical message. Take the raw energy of the Pixies and mix it with the understated themes of early Kenny Rogers, and you get something like this.” (Quotation taken from The Literary Greats website).

Over the years they have released albums that were pretty good, but their latest CD has to be one of my favorites! The beauty about "Tangled Tales" is how harmonious the music flows together. It reminds me of the classic Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, assembling country and blues' greats like David Grisman, Charlie Musselwhite, Roy Rogers, and Bruce Forman, and others! What is my pick of the bounty? Download "A Magician," and you'll see why I love it. John Legend, like the CD title tells us, has Evolved into a terrific musician and artist. Every track takes you on roller-coaster of emotions, passion, and lyrics, thrilling your ears at every turn!
