It was "Bulletproof" that hit me. La Roux's self titled album contains the essence of 80's New Wave, featuring synth sequences that would fit in songbooks of Blancmange, The Human League, Dead or Alive and Eurythmics. I think La Roux would have been huge back in the dance era of the Thompson Twins and Thomas Dolby, but I'm happy they are part of a new dance explosion bent on geminating fans of Tecktonik (TCK), Electro Dance, Milky Way, Vertigo, and anything post-Emo.

The collision between British musicians and Black American music has produced an ever growing treasury of limb-pulsing, butt-shaking, hart-swelling music, which--thankfully is often the result of soul-brothers and sisters made from the most unlikely sort--case in point, New Order. In "Get Ready" New Order ditch the temptation of dance-floor stagnation for what seems to be a reach for that mythical pop radio sound--dead since the late 80's--guess what, the idea turns out well. "Get Ready" a hybrid of post-punk-pop-and-b push songs you can sing (even when you don't know the words), music and melody that seem so familiar that you'd think they are pop standards. About the cover design of "Get Ready", at the time gave New Order a much needed youth fueled look firmly placed in the now, yet over the years this image of a young woman holding a consumer video camera will look less of the now, and more of the then, the then you missed out on, the then that was really cool. Nice work :) Noteworthy Tracks: Crystal 60 miles an hour Rock the Shack Someone Like You

Many people like to keep their favorite bands to themselves, only sharing their prized fan-dom with their closest friends, I suppose we all want to have access to the people and things we love most, and feel that standing in the back of a line to see what one discovered by chance rather than through mass media is a humiliating thought. One such band which I keep close to my chest is Dengue Fever. It's hard not to dance when listing to Dengue Fever--which is not surprising--but what is surprising is that their sound is inspired by 1960s Vietnam-war-era form of Cambodian rock called "Khmer Rock", a pop genre that was huge in Cambodian but has only recently come to the radios, and ipods of North America. Here's the thing, Dengue Fever is a L.A. based group who's infectious sound is a not only fueled with a tank of Khmer Rock but is also lined with cool quilting of Southeast Asian pop, Vietnam-war-era lounge music, klezmer, ska, surf rock, and Ethiopian jazz. Anyway, I think it would be fine if Dengue Fever became big here in the States, so there. And what about you, what band are you keeping to yourself, send me a complement and tell me ;)

But I was very pleasantly surprised by this collection as each artist (all very skilled and true artists) made each track their own. They made them new again. The songs kept their original flavor, while bringing something new, whether it was singing in a different key, adding harmonies, adding riffs, or giving the song a new feel. My favorite was Kevon Edmonds' rendition of "Never Let You Down." It was so good, I think that might have to be my wedding song someday! Kem's rendering of "Golden Time of Day" sent chills down my spine. I loved the new feel added to Musiq's "Silky Soul" and "I Wanna Thank You" with The Clark Sisters. Raheem DeVaughn knocked me out with his vocals on "We Are One," and Ledisi proved why she is a true artist and a powerful singer on "Happy Feelins." Mint Condition, the only band on the LP, turned in a solid performance that paid tribute to the old while making it new, while Joe and Avant were smooth on their tracks. The only track I wasn't impressed with was Mary J. Blige's "Before I Let Go." That's a hard song to remake and have people accept, but Mary didn't even sound like she was trying. But the song is not unbearable. This CD was so good, I HAD to write a review!”– J Double U (Amazon.com Review)

While faithful to the originals, these tracks vary in many ways, both in the colors their voices bring to the harmonies and in the styles of guitar work on display. Both performers clearly love the era and the radio singles they sang along to when they were young. Their emotional fidelity is as remarkable as their technical proficiency, and the fact that both have retained their youthful attitudes and voices in middle age (Hoffs is 50!) amazes this aging baby-boomer. Both CDs are a joy to listen to, and we can only hope that the two will give us further volumes devoted to the 80s, when Hoffs' group The Bangles had their heyday, and to the 90s, when Sweet made his commercial breakthrough. I also recommend the bonus tracks that you can download for this album, which include ten more interesting and adventuresome cuts:” – T.Davis “Tom Davis” (Amazon.com Review)

Their second release ‘Ocean, Meet the Valley’ is a little darker, a little deeper, and more dynamic yet retains some of the warm, catchy hooks that characterized their first release. They teamed up with engineer/producer Chris Grainger with one goal: to bring out the best in each other. Working long hours over 10 days, they bottled up a year of life, love, loss, and dreams to create a record with no pretentions and as rich as the gulf air. Sonically, this record possesses vintage tones through the use of 70’s era equipment and concepts. Acoustic guitars and warm, gritty electrics are intertwined with the smooth chime of a Rhodes or the haunt of a Hammond. Tones find their way to and fro through the structure of the song enough to keep things interesting without overshadowing the lyrical message. Take the raw energy of the Pixies and mix it with the understated themes of early Kenny Rogers, and you get something like this.” (Quotation taken from The Literary Greats website).

Anyone who has seen him live in NY - well let's just say, its a performance you don't soon forget. If you like Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Peter Cincotti, Kurt Elling or Jamie Cullum you'll love this record. After moving to New York, Vasandani quickly became a part of the jazz scene, and made a musical home in storied clubs like the Zinc Bar. Over the years they have released albums that were pretty good, but their latest CD has to be one of my favorites! The beauty about "Tangled Tales" is how harmonious the music flows together. Recovering from the tragic murders of her mother, brother, and cousin, Jennifer Hudson returns with a self-entitled album and a critically acclaimed single, "If This Isn't Love." Music reporter David Balls remarks "If This Isn't Love' is a delicate love song that finds Hudson in her natural comfort zone. 'God sent me an angel from above, that's going to love me for life,' she sings soulfully, with recent events making the lyrics particularly resonant. Combining modish beats with a cool, breezy chorus, 'If This Isn't Love' ...has an understated charm that's hard to quibble with." (Digitalspy.com) Listening to the song, I find myself an audience to Hudson's heart.

Duffy is the singer shaking up the industry. I can't get enough of her voice, which is complex and earthy, highlighted by unusual soul for her age. “Mercy" does the British singer justice, mixing desire and fun into a track anyone can listen to and resonate with. Reviewer Amaranth "Music Fan" adds her "...ode to sexual liberation is as feisty as Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man." She sings with gusto and passion. Duffy, with her retro sound, is an Amy Winehouse without the baggage. Her song is reminiscent of the '60s. One can imagine the bell bottoms, the psychedelia, and the Beatles in their heyday."
