Grace Jones - A One Man Show
There are only a few video collections from the 80's that I'd love to see back in print, this is one of them. Grace Jones received a Grammy nomination for her "A One Man Show". If you ever get a chance to see it you'll understand why. All I can say is "A One Man Show" captures the full power of the Grace Jones sound and vision, there is nothing that compares.

I listened to a stack of albums in the "World Music" section at the Virgin Mega Store and after nearly abandoning my search I came across the inspired talent of Souad Massi from Algeria. Souad Massi's sound is sometimes described as Algerian folk/rock, this maybe somewhat true, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm attracted to her lamentful ballads as well as her more urgent themes. Description Debut album by Algerian vocalist who is based in Paris. Thealbum fuses North African styles with western pop and folk,utilising both the acoustic guitar and the oud. Massi composed each of the songs and delivers them in either French or Arabic.

Liking, listening to or recommending this album goes without saying. Perhaps that's why I never put it on here, I don't know. However, it's quickly becoming one of my favorite Radiohead albums.

My favorite Everything But The Girl era on one album, lots of bitter relationship stuff here, also a lot of hope, love honesty, lies, and heartfelt emotions infused with a DJ edge that I still love to revisit.

After the show I got a Portishead hoodie, which immediately became my most prized possession, unfortunately I was so high from the show I left the hoodie in the taxi. Well at least there was a great recoding of the Roseland show. Discription: PNYC captures Bristol, England's Portishead live, a situation which presents a particular challenge to a band so closely associated with studio experimentation. Portishead's sound, however, is built around the otherworldly vocals of Beth Gibbons, who immediately dispels any notion that such a performance needs to have anything canned about it. The spontaneity is helped along by a stunning palette of guitars, which combine with the the band's imaginative turntable work to create a thrilling, bombastic and unpredictable live experience. PNYC opens up with the swell of a string section, and quickly dissolves into the menacing, orchestrated strains of "Humming", over which Gibbons gives a stirring vocal performance, every bit as spontaneous as the rhythmic scratching which weaves in and out of the song's organ-based backdrop. "Over" features a particularly seductive voice-guitar intro, which mutates into an epic, gargantuan bass-synth groove. Guitar textures are, in fact, a prominent feature throughout PNYC, notably on the rocked-up, tremolo-soaked six-string thatdominates the live version of the band's signature tune, "Sour Times".

My uncle bought one of these so I could convert all of his old albums into CDs and I can't tell you how pleased he was! He just had a 50yr Anniversary party and it really fit the ambient to play all his old 45s through his iPod!

There is a reason I recommend so many female artist, it's because they bring a feeling to music which is of a color that male artists seldom (if not ever) attain. There is a reason I recommend so many female artist, it's because they bring a feeling to music which is of a color that male artists seldom (if not ever) attain. In the case of Yelle and "Pop-Up" the pairing of GrandMarnier's contemporary dance production and Yelle's voice is spectacular, I'm not able to understand a word she sings (and I have to admit it's liberating not to have to enter the music through the meaning of words), and yet the sound, beat and texture of their collaboration is instantly addictive. Here's what happened to me, one moment a song from "Pop-Up" was playing in the record sore I was in, the next moment I was buying it, one moment I was driving with "Pop-Up" playing at normal volume, the next moment I had turned the volume up to the MAX!!! What's more is here in this age of bespoke playlists where one can download just the one good song off any album, I feel "Pop-Up" is a really good album as a whole, it's well balanced between it's many moods. For me Yelle is the missing link between Françoise Cactus of STEREO TOTAL and MIA. I do wish I did know what Yelle is singing about just in case she is the French version Kathleen Hanna or Le Tigre.

I've enjoyed the evolution of Ryuichi Sakamoto's early 21st Century compositions, for me the sparse emotive keyboard and piano atmospheres created in "BTTB" and his film music provided the perfect pause my ears longed for. "Bricolages" is a collection that also brings in more percussive and active personality which has been held back from some of the recordings made in the late 90's and 00's.
