This is probably one of my top three favorite movies of all time. **with Robert DeNiro, Jeremy Irons, Ray McAnally, Aidan Quinn, Liam Neeson Roland Joffe directs this epic about the Catholic Church's attempts at converting an Indian tribe in South America. You can care nothing about any part of the subject matter going into this and LOVE this movie. Its visuals are rich and stunning, the soundtrack is one of the best ever created and the acting is superb. Over twenty years after first seeing it, it remains one of the best movies I've ever watched. And I'm a bit of a movie junkie to put it mildly. Few have seen it, few will ever forget it once they have. Just watch the opening.... or listen, I should say. The score is so gorgeous it brings me to tears. The film uses the talents and voices of the actual Indian tribe of which the movie is about in the music. As a fan of both Tan Dun and Yo-yo Ma I was instantly excited when I first learned that they headed the commissioned symphony for reunification of Hong Kong to China. I was only a little girl at the time but this instantly became one of my favourites. At the time I was in the middle of my classical training as a pianist and would play along to the strings. This is a beautiful mix of both eastern and western sounds and comes together as pure harmony.

My kids loved this creative and wholesome show on HBO Family and the DVD is on the way. The short stories are played by adorable puppies to exemplify golden rules like treating others like you want to be treated. I also really liked that they state the classical music composer to the soundtrack of each story. Its a very fun way to educate kids. I know my kids will watch this over and over. I think there are still shows running on HBO but I really recommend the DVD!

I understand why classical music is such a turn-off for pretty much anyone under 70. The music is often slow, always long (compared to 2 minute pop songs), have no catchy 'hooks', and, to top it all off, there's this enormous amount of pretentious, educational-sounding knowledge that is associated with pretty much anyone into classical music. With all that said though, I think you should give this CD a try. Put it on your iPod or stereo and just listen - listen for 5 minutes. The whole beauty of classical music is the composition, the subtle changes and flashes of brilliance, and the beautiful, completely analog instruments. I have no knowledge of Bach or what keys he composed in. I have no understanding of half of the words printed on these CD's. I know as much about classical music as your probably do. The pieces on this CD are played so well by Mutter (the lead violion) and are at once lively and touching. I recommend listening to the 2nd song of each 3 part piece; these are slow but beautiful. Try it - you might just like it.
