Scarface (1983)

Scarface (1983)

How did they get that much F-ing language and violence past the ratings committee back in 1983? The upcoming "platinum edition" is supposedly rated "X" but I don't think that's even a real MPAA rating. Perhaps it's something in the 20 minutes of deleted scenes.

  • The Great Gatsby, perhaps the first preppy novel?

My favorite movie ever. From the opening scene, the soundtrack is perfect, you watch as Harold prepares and then hangs himself. This is one of several brilliant scenes where he fakes his own suicides desperately trying to get the attention of his rich mother. Enter Maude, an eccentric old woman he meets at a funeral. It's a love story. A love story with life.

But out of his limited budgets and lurid studio-provided titles, he crafted masterpieces of horror and suspense. His atmospheric films are often neglected and rarely talked about and this boxed set includes the best for an incredibly reasonable price. These are truly artistic thrillers all together in one collection for less than $30 bucks. Don't let the silly titles fool you...these are serious films about the dark half of mankind. To quote an editorial review of the collection, James Agee, the premier American film critic of the 1940s, reckoned that Val Lewton was one of the three foremost creative figures in Hollywood--an assessment yet more impressive when we consider that the other two were Charles Chaplin and Walt Disney. Includes: Cat People / The Curse of the Cat People / I Walked with a Zombie / The Body Snatcher / Isle of the Dead / Bedlam / The Leopard Man / The Ghost Ship / The Seventh Victim / Shadows in the Dark

James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald.

And Keira Knightley isn't annoying in this at all.
