A great commentary on the war in Iraq by Robert Scheer. Robert Scheer is a journalist with over 30 years experience. He has built his reputation on the strength of his social and political writing. Between 1964 and 1969, he was Vietnam correspondent, managing editor and editor in chief of Ramparts magazine. From 1976 to 1993, he served as a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, where he wrote articles on such diverse topics as the Soviet Union, arms control, national politics and the military. He is currently a contributing editor at The Times, as well as a contributing editor for The Nation magazine. A great post from the Huffington Post.

An example of the population's ignorance towards the course of this war can be seen, for one, in the title of this poster. "Communist Militant Leader". I am hoping I will not have to explain my self and that if you are one of those who views socialism as always more government and capitalism as less, and anarchism as chaos, I hope you will do your research on the Spanish Revolution and it will turn your views completely around.

This is a CLASSIC. Any kid who grew up in Soviet-era 1970s or 1980s will immediately know Cheburashka. He is of indeterminate origin, was discovered in a box of oranges (SO adorably absurd), has an accordion-playing crocodile named Gena as a best friend, and has huge floppy ears and a sweet, earnest face. He's cute, fuzzy and the stop-motion can't be beat. There's a wee bit of propaganda thrown in there, but it's NOT heavy handed, and it usually has to do with helping out others and power to the people. Cause hey, what WASN'T rife with propaganda in the Soviet Bloc? This is the perfect gift for parents who want their children to see quality animation from other world cultures and styles---animation that has heart and character but DOES NOT come out of a major US studio.

Reagan grabs the paper and turns to the international page and scratches his chin and states, "hmmm, I see there are skirmishes again on the border between Germany and China." Love that one. Anyway, also great for desert islands? Minty breath. Even world leaders get that not-so-fresh feeling.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I recently read it while on vacation, and although I really enjoyed the story, some of the claims made in the book seem dubious, and it seems like people who have looked into the matter have... I recently read it while on vacation, and although I really enjoyed the story, some of the claims made in the book seem dubious, and it seems like people who have looked into the matter have been unable to corroborate the author's account. The story itself - about a group escape of a Soviet prison camp and their year long walk through Siberia, Mongolia the Gobi desert, Tibet and the Himalayas - is great, a well written easy read. If you can't stand the thought of reading something that might be dishonest, try "The Gulag Archipelago" for a more depressing, but probably more realistic view of the lives and treatment of Soviet political prisoners. Volume 3 of that series even has some good escape stories.
