Much to my visual pleasure, the Aussie artist SKAFFS has illustrated his first tale for kids at heart. No wonder it blooms with retina-popping delight and serves up cute critters of the land down under. Here innocence is no reason not to explore the unknown, not an excuse to fear it - those were the days! Plus it has an childlike buoyancy which allows anything to happen under the sun. In an age of troubles, SKAFFS art washes over my eyeballs like a cool breeze and makes bedtimes go down silky smooth.

Just in time for fall, comes a bunch of critters who look all warm in their wool coats. I suppose it was just a matter of time before someone recognized that the Woollyhoodwinks were just too cuddly, cozy, and cute and had to star in their own children's book. But here they are staring into the "patch" that has fallen from the sky. Soon this "dark patch" will do a "blob" turn and start spreading across the verdant Black North Forest. Luckily these five plush dolls are more ingenious and funny than Steve McQueen. Plus their adventures are told in a narrative style so offbeat and unique (somewhere between poetry and prose), that I'm sure the more I re-read it, the more I'll understand how I'm a 'Wink and everybody is a 'Wink too in their own special way. ;)

(If you need me to explain what R2D2 is or why that's freaking awesome, this list is not for you.) This is the stuff of which L. Frank Baum's nightmares were made. Didn't you know he was obsessed by robots? I'm not kidding on that one. He was. And here I just blew a fortune on Hasbro's life-size talky-talky, beepy-beepy plastic version of R2 for my husband's birthday. Believe me, that droid has got a serious attitude problem. They programmed him that way. He only listens to you half the time. The rest of the time he just gives you lip and keeps trying to run away. I can tell that this beer-barrel-bodied fellow would be much more of a gentleman. Amazing. I skipped the via link because the entire known blogosphere was linking to this project. Gizmodo, boing boing, geekologie, neatorama ... seriously, everyone. So make your usual rounds.
