Pace/MacGill Gallery: David Bryne

David Byrne's exhibition Furnishing the Self - Upholstering the Soul ended in Nov '06, but you can still see lots of his selected works on Pace/MacGill's gallery website. Fabulous.

  • Talking Heads have created a few perfect albums, "Fear of Music" is one of them. My favorite tracks: I Zimbra Mind Life During Wartime Memories Can't Wait Animals Electric Guitar Drugs

  • This is my favorite American Afro Funk album from the 80's. Danceable, funky, quirky, arty, and urgent, just like the times in which it was composed in.

  • Miles Fisher's cover of "This Must be the Place" is just awesome. It one ups Byrne's original imo. The video borders on genius too.

While previously known more for his compositions for the trendsetting world music group Ancient Future, this first solo effort features his improvisational music. As leader of the world music group Ancient Future, Matthew Montfort has devoted himself to the scalloped fretboard guitar since 1978. He spent years of study with some of the world’s best musicians, such as gamelan director K.R.T. Wasitodipuro, North Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan, and vina master K.S. Subramanian, with whom he did an intensive study of South Indian note-bending techniques. He has performed concerts worldwide, from the Festival Internacional de la Guitarra on the golden coast of Spain to the Festival of India in Mumbai. He has worked with many world music legends, including tabla phenomenon Zakir Hussain and Chinese zither master Zhao Hui. Montfort wrote the book “Ancient Traditions – Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa, Bali, and India,” which has been used by many musicians to improve their rhythm skills.

  • It's an eclectic blend of faux science, automatic writing, satire, and an attempt to find connections where none were thought to exist,a sort of self-therapy, allowing the hand to say what the voice cannot.
