Ys by Joanna Newsom

Ys by Joanna Newsom

Before "Ys" I was sort of on the fence about Joanna Newsom; now I heart her with all my love. I think this is probably the only time in my life that I'll be obsessed with someone who plays harp.

  • Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are, In Bloom, Lithium are just some of the iconic songs on this album. I mean, honestly, Nevermind was the voice of our generation... wow that sounds so deep.

This is the album where the Chili Pepper sound really jells for the first time and they start getting their dues. There's still the rawness and the crazy funk moments, like on "Suck My Kiss", but "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away" are much more accessible and radio friendly. A lot funkier than some of their later releases, this album has a great groove to it.

Everyone has a favorite and it's hard to pick just one with Dylan because so many are so damned good and for different reasons - he's so mercurial and changable and that is part of what makes him great. But for classic Dylan as we think we "know" Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home is the way to go with the songs that helped make his name and it has that gritty New York sound before he went too smooth and moved on to his next manager... this still retains all of the urban feeling that was still his New York sound and i love it for that
