Of course you have Cusack who is a one of those guys you just can't help but adore. The film is about love and music, two things that breath life into everything. Taken from the book by Nick Hornby and directed by Stephen Frears so really with all these brilliant minds on one project, how can you go wrong?

  • AWESOME movie. I still love this, simply because David Bowie plays the Goblin King. One of those weird, dark kid's movies that probably scared you more than you wanted to admit. Oh, and Jennifer Connelly's in it too.

True, there is a LOT of crap out there, but that doesn't change the fact that this movie is brilliant. Basically, it tells the story of this guy Tony Wilson and how he made Manchester the center of music in the seventies. It is build like a documentary and it's entertaining as hell! Tony Wilson makes so many smart, sarcastic side comments, you can't but smirk most of the time. You get a pretty good idea on the atmosphere of the time, not to mention on the musical scene. Joy Division, The sex pistols, New Order, Happy Mondays.....just to name a few. It's definetly worth watching! (and yes, I jumped up and down like an idiot when they showed Janie Jones from the Clash for miserable 5 seconds).

Beauty isn't necessarily as beauty does in this movie about men, women and the search for a love that will last. My favorite scenes, however, involve conversations between the character played by Timothy Hutton (Willie) and that of Natalie Portman (Marty). Natalie, even as a tween, nearly steals the whole show.

A fascinating documentary about the rise and fall of the Brit Pop music moment of the 90s. It may have barely made a blip in North America (I still cannot believe that Oasis is only known as "That Wonderwall band", but the genre made a lasting impact in the UK with much of the modern music being made there owes a huge debt to the bands of BritPop. Live Forever takes it's name from the Oasis song and certainly asks and answers the question "Where were you while we were getting high?" With compelling interviews from some of the major players such as Blur's Damon Albarn, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Oasis's brothers Gallagher who come across as bitter, depressed and as cocksure as ever, in that order. Live Forever sheds a light on the things in the background of the media-propelled musical genre of Brit Pop. Certainly fascinating and not just to those like me, who were and are fans.

Many English-Canadians find it unwatchable, sadly. Bruce McDonald is something of a maverick filmmaker and manages to make cool Canadian films like Hard Core Logo and Highway 61. The basic story is a small-town barber (Don McKellar) and a smuggler (Valerie Buhagiar) strap a corpse to the roof of a 63 Ford Galaxy and drive from northern Ontario done to New Orleans. It's the middle film in McDonald's road trip trilogy (the other two being Roadkill and Hard Core Logo) so their journey is chockful of oddities and bizarreness. Did I mention they were being chased by the devil?

Only Joel and Ethan Coen, the fraternal director and producer team behind art-house hits such as The Big Lebowski and Fargo and masters of quirky and ultra-stylish genre subversion, would dare nick the plot line of Homer's Odyssey for a comic picaresque saga about three cons on the run in 1930s Mississippi. Our wandering hero in this case is one Ulysses Everett McGill, a slick-tongued wise guy with a thing about hair pomade (George Clooney, blithely sending up his own dapper image) who talks his chain-gang buddies (Coen-movie regular John Turturro and newcomer Tim Blake Nelson) into lighting out after some buried loot he claims to know of. En route they come up against a prophetic blind man on a railroad truck, a burly, one-eyed baddie (the ever-magnificent John Goodman), a trio of sexy singing ladies, a blues guitarist who's sold his soul to the devil, a brace of crooked politicos on the stump, a manic-depressive bank robber, and--well, you get the idea. Into this, their most relaxed film yet, the Coens have tossed a beguiling ragbag of inconsequential situations, a wealth of looping, left-field dialogue, and a whole stash of gags both verbal and visual. O Brother (the title's lifted from Preston Sturges's classic 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels) is furthermore graced with glowing, burnished photography from Roger Deakins and a masterly soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett that pays loving homage to American '30s folk styles--blues, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and more. And just to prove that the brothers haven't lost their knack for bad-taste humor, we get a Ku Klux Klan rally choreographed like a cross between a Nuremberg rally and a Busby Berkeley musical.

Watch the French version - it's virtually a silent film anyway - and allow yourself to be immersed into the odd whimsy of this movie. A boy named Champion is raised by his loving grandmother, Madame Souza and grows into a massively-thighed Tour de France competitor. However, during the race, he and a number of other cyclists are kidnapped by thugs and Madame Souza accompanied by her faithful, fat and flatulent dog Bruno chase after them to the metropolis of Belleville. Lost and confused in the city, she meets the mysterious Belleville Triplettes, in their youth a glamourous performing act who now subsist by bomb-fishing for frogs and performing as an odd jazz combo. Madame Souza joins them and soon discovers where Champion is being held and hatches a plan to rescue him. Bewilderingly creative, truly original and fascinating is the world of Les Triplettes de Belleville. See for yourself!

The family is joined by the mother's younger musician lover. Throw in some drugs, alcohol, free inhibitions and rock in roll and you've got a recipe for relationship disaster. This is a REALLY GOOD 4 star movie. Also starring Kate Beckinsale, Alessandro, Nivola and Frances McDormand.
