The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

I love Rock'n'Roll, but on some level Folk will always have my heart. And the Decemberists can put out some of the best folk-pop around. For their major label debut they don't disappoint. A twelve minute epic based on The Tempest, the catchiest song cycle about a Japanese folk tale you will ever hear, along with a lovely creepy ballad about cereal killers and a song against war. Steven Colbert called them "hyperliterate prog rock" I call them happiness in a six inch disc.

Corinne Bailey Rae is one of my new favourite artistes. She released this self-titled debut album in 2006 and shot to the top of the charts with "Put Your Records On". "Like A Star" is one of my all-time favourite songs. Corinne is amazingly talented with a husky voice and a genuinely sweet demeanor. She is one the few artists today that has a real talent and I love that she is bringing jazz back to the fore along with artistes like Amy Winehouse. This album is fantastic!

It's a very politically minded EP, all the songs definitely have an agenda to them, but this has never been a band to shy away from having a position to stand behind.

Ever had a band you liked alright, but then you see them live and feel the sudden need to get every album they ever made because they are ten kinds of awesome? That's my current feeling about Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. So if you like this album, and you should, because it's got some super-great songs on it, like "Under the Hedge", and "Timorous Me" (two of my all-time fav of their songs), you need to go see them live so you can fully appreciate how amazing they really are. But if that's not an option, than sit down and revel in this album, and Shake the Sheets, and be happy that you have such great taste in music.

A great compilation of indie's hottest hitmakers, compiled by Natalie Portman. The proceeds from this album go to FINCA, a NGO dedicated to reliving poverty and starvation, and an organization for whom Natalie Portman is an ambassador of hope. A great selection of songs either way though, with tracks by Tokyo Police Club, Beirut, Tom Brosseau, Curumin, The Shins, Brett Dennen (who has an amazing folk song that's instantly catchy), Sean Hayes, Thee More Shallows, Angus & Julia Stone, Antony & The Johnsons, Vetiver, Norah Jones, Devendra Banhart, M. Ward, Wooden Wand, and Rogue Wave.

  • Great pop song. It's catchy and infectious, just like it ought to be, with a good hook. It's got a good sing-along chorus and the beat is stirring. Wonderful summer pop song.

  • A really good, catchy album from a band that never did get its due. They're mostly an acoustic affair, tending to the indie pop side of things, and the lyrics are witty. Key tracks "Fear of Falling", and "Gwendolin".

I loved it at first, the catchy songs that get stuck in your head, the particularly British view of life. But then I got swept up in all these other great bands that seemed to overshadow them. Then I listened to "Move on Now", which I never liked as much, since it varies in tone so much from the rest of the album, but it reminded me that there's more than just hooky choruses here.
