Etymotic Earphones

Etymotic Earphones

These are truly awesome earphones. They effectively block out background sound w/out forcing you to blast out your eardrums. The sound quality is very clear w/surprisingly good bass for such tiny speakers (I listen to a lot of electronica w/pounding beats so good bass is essential for me). Handles more delicate classical music well too. Also, they are super-comfortable and lightweight- ideal for endurofest rides and runus. The extralong cord is nice but can get tangled a bit too easily

Most earphones fall right out of my ear, thanks in large part to my unusually-prominent fossa triangularis. [ http://tr.im/fossa_triangularis ]. This company not only has kickass sound quality, but durable, full-featured earphones that rest where I need them to rest. The price on the manufacturer's website seems a bit daunting, admittedly, but my guess is that these marvels of modern technology can be found elsewhere for a bit of a bargain. ;)

My co-workers hated these earphones. Why? Because could never tell if I was wearing them at my desk, and they would be yelling across the room, trying to get my attention, and I seriously could not hear them! These earphones really know how to isolate your music! Great sound quality and bass too! The drawback, it doesn't fit on my iPhone, but you can buy an adapter for that. The company who makes this also does research and development for hearing aids and high fidelity sound for musicians, so it seems very trustworthy. They're perfect for public transportation, road trips, and especially office use.

These headphones seem to be universally loved by reviewers and purchasers alike. The main reason why I did not buy these a while back was because I had heard that the cables amplified cord noise whenever you moved. Annoying. Sometime during the past 2 years Etymotic made some key changes to the design of the ER-4P's, including switching to twisted cables that eliminate the microphonic effect. Plus, although the retail price is $299, you can actually buy these for less than $200 online. Sold! I still love my Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pro earphones, but not as much as my new Etymotic ER-4Ps!

Did I make the best decision? Who knows. It's not like I have so much cash that I can afford to buy and test every pair of earphones and headphones out there. I like the appearance- it verges on slightly generic (mine are white), but its fairly unobtrusive and doesn't look like a growth coming out of my ear. I have found that these isolate noise really well, which is great when you want to sink into the music or drown out your surroundings. There are four total audio drivers- two for the left and two for the right. According to super.fi, there is one on each side for high frequencies while the others handle low frequencies. I don't know how much of that my ears can distinguish, but I can tell that the sound quality is excellent. I hate how the loud the Etymotic cables are- this is just my personal preference- and the super.fi's cables are nice and quiet. They have reinforced wires that you can use to mold the cables around your ears if you want. I do like the portable case that came with my Shure's better than the UE cases. I use the UE leather case on an everyday basis and it is fine, but it's essentially just a wee padded leather pouch with a velcro closure. I have to make sure to be careful when loading in the earphones so the wires don't get all tangled. The UE aluminum case is much more organized, but it's also quite a bit larger and more bulky. The package comes with quite a bit: - Earphones with 46" cable, cable adjustor and gold plated 1/8" input plug - Leather storage case - Metallic storage case - 1/4" adaptor jack - Sound Level Attenuator - Cleaning Tool - 6 single flange silicone (2 small, 2 medium, 2 large) - 2 standard foam eartips - User Guide/Warranty Card Retails for $249.99. You can find it a bit cheaper at other web sites.
