Talk about an interesting cast worth watching. It stars Black Thought from the Roots, Naomie Harris, Rosario Dawson and Paul Dano as residents of a poverty stricken neighborhood in North Philladelphia (Philly! Woot!). The movie follows interconnected stories of love, relationships and poverty in this slice of life American tale. Looks powerful! In theaters March 6th 2009.

Michelle Pfeiffer's character as Alison Lohman's mother makes Joan Crawford (subject of "Mommie Dearest") seem warm and fuzzy. As Lohman skips from foster home to foster home as a direct result of her mother's malignant interference, she eventually learns what to expect . . . and then becomes old enough to do something about it. Gritty and gut-wrenching, this movie is compelling enough to keep you captivated until the very end.

This is an amazing Peter Jackson film (pre Lord of the RIngs) Jackson's career trajectory really leaves me confused. He went from gory low brow B movies like Bad Taste to mainstream fair like Heavenly Creatures to Lord of the Rings. Consistency, please. Heavenly Creatures is at first a sweet movie about the friendship between two teen girls that moves to being a little odd, to awkward, to disturbing. One of these girls is crazy and takes the other one to crazytown with her.

Mary Tyler Moore blew me away with her performance as the distant, cold-hearted mother in this movie. Knowing her only as the buoyant Mary of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", I was even more chilled by her character's inability to connect with anyone but herself. And although Timothy Hutton's struggles are primarily psychological, he makes them almost tangible through his vibrant and honest portrayal of a young man who has lost sight of what he wants from life . . . and if he really wants to live.
