The Golden Age by John C. Wright

The Golden Age by John C. Wright

When I reached the end and found that this book was "to be continued" I was disappointed. When I found that the second and third novels have already been published, I was pleased that I would get to enjoy more of this intriguing story. Update: The second two books are just as enjoyable, though I got just a little bored at the very end.

Both books are action packed, high tech, near-future scifi with the most notable and exciting feature being the accuracy in Suarez' descriptions of computer technology and the application of online gaming concepts brought into the physical world. Must-read (or audible.com listening) for techies and gamers.

Duncan Jones first feature film is a story full of paradoxes. It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, and the sole inhabitant completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth’s primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive. Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a two weeks time. Finally, he will leave the isolation of “Sarang,” the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond “Gerty,” the base’s well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer. Suddenly, Sam’s health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago. Confined with what appears to be a clone of his earlier self, and with a “support crew” on its way to help put the base back into productive order, Sam is fighting the clock to discover what’s going on and where he fits into company plans.

Okay, okay, these novels are intended for an audience much younger than me: it can be found in the Young Adult section of the bookstore. I like to find science fiction in this section though because what it usually means is "great concepts, quick read." This apocalyptic science fiction delivers on both. A cautionary tale on where a various types of science can take us if taken too far (Prozac-style drugs, surgical/genetic enhancements, surveillance) with a good dose of teenage rebellion thrown in. A really fun read.

One of the best science fiction movie I've ever seen!! In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specialises in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when five replicants escape from an offworld colony to Earth. The film stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young and Daryl Hannah. A fabulous movie - I highly recommend

  • Unlike esh, I enjoyed Manifold Space quite a lot too. Perhaps the key is to wait a few years so you've completely forgotten the plot of Manifold Time before starting the sequel.
