The Proposition
This is a great dark Western that most people slept on. Directed and written by musician Nick Cave, this story is set in the Australian outback and stars Guy Pearce (Momento) as an outlaw who is proposition by corrupt law enforcers. The proposition: Trade his younger brother's freedom (who faces the gallows) for his notorious and elusive older brother. Eesh! Tough one.

A brilliant first feature film by video artist Steve McQueen about the story of IRA member Bobby Sands and the hunger strike he undertook while imprisoned in the early 1980s. Without posing moral judgement, the film highlights the subjectivity and power of conviction as well as its possible profundity and futility. This movie is scarce on dialogue but has one of the sharpest written 15 minute, single shot dialogue scenes I've ever had the pleasure of viewing.

I refuse to believe a great cast (Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Phillip Seymore Hoffman and Kenneth Branagh) could make a crappy movie. That said, I may wait until it's available on DVD, but I'll see it never- the-less. Its about a pirate radio station in the 60's being broadcast on a boat in the North Sea by a bunch of rogue DJs. Hmmm, I'm interested.
