Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos

This time of year always makes me nostaglic for old monster films from the 30's, 40's and 50's. And if you're a fan of these like I am then you have probably seen Basil Gogos' art. He has painted some of the most iconic portraits of classic monsters including Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney and Bela Lugosi as the Mummy, Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Phantom. His oddly bright and expressionistic color palette allowed him to render some of the most effective portraits of horror film denezins ever. This is the first monograph of his work and belongs in every horror or classic monster fan's library.

This cover for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was done by one of my personal heroes, Mr. Dan Clowes, which should be enough to recommend it to anyone. This is classic piece of horror literature...this is a classic piece of literature PERIOD and if one were to judge a book by its cover, which you shouldn' t you know but which i do anyway, one would certainly choose this beautiful edition with dust jacket designs by the amazing Dan Clowes. Click on the alternate views to see the full dust jacket design... i know having this edition does not improve the value of the amazing story contained within its pages but goddamn if it doesn't make it look purdy on the shelf...

It first appeared almost 25 years ago and now it's almost impossible to find. This is by far one of the most beautiful examples of an illustrated piece of literature and now Dark Horse Comics and Bernie Wrightson are working together to re-release this epic in a larger hard cover format that it deserves. It will include the entire novel Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and all 47 full-page illustrations by Wrightson. The precisely detailed and atmospheric pen and ink renderings of the story are truly breathtaking. Go to Dark Horse Comics' website and reserve your copy of this masterpiece today.

Timothy Basil Ering's gorgeous illustrations and handwritten journal entries take you inside the mind of the modern prometheus. It functions as a fantastic companion to Shelley's original novel. Besides being an interesting coffin table book, it is a glory to read. The sketches and chickenscratch scrawl suck you into a rich world of reanimated corpses and horrendous hubris. A delightful gift for a friend or yourself. Check out the internet for used copies (Powells.com, Amazon).
